Writer's Block

Fred’s blog this past Friday made me anxious. Like Fred, I generally write my blog a few days before it’s posted or, if I’m going away, I use a prewritten blog from my blog bank. Normally, by Friday, I have a blog topic selected. On Saturday morning, I sit at my kitchen table with my cup of coffee and write and post my blog.

As I read Fred’s blog I realized I had no topic in mind. I was blank. And I have no available blogs in my “bank” because I used them when I went on vacation in December. Saturday came and went and no topic came to me. My anxiety grew.

It’s now Sunday and I'm sitting at my table with my coffee but I’m still blank. I have nothing, zilch, nada.

What do you do when you’re blank?

I think of something that might be troubling or haunting me.

One can always comment on the topic of the day. Often the interactions I have can provide fodder for what I write. Yesterday for example could be described as a multicultural social outing with my wife -- and I never ventured out of Queens.

Did you watch Patrcia Arquette's speech at the Oscar presentation. She certainly had a lot to comment on which related to women's issues etc. When I am stumped I take a shower - I get my best ideas when I am in the shower.

I wait until Monday night to come up with my topic -- just sit with a blank mind -- its scary sometimes but a little fun.

Clearly the thing to do when you have writer's block, is to write about having writer's block. : ) - Stacey
