(No) Fear

When we are on vacation we go to a bike friendly place that is flat and has bike lanes. We have been going there for 17 years and have never had a car.

Biking is our main transportation, morning, noon and night. We have mid century "cruisers" without gears and pedal reversal brakes.

To be honest, biking is always a vacation high light. It is both invigorating and sensuous  (especially biking into a warm night breeze).

Truth be told, I do not wear a helmet and have a compulsive rule that once a ride starts I will stay in motion until my destination is reached, ie, I can not put my foot down at red lights, in traffic or at stop signs.

I find that I can negotiate my way through by accelerating, swerving, circling or slowing to a near stop. A crucial ingredient is the lack of hesitation or fear.

It's just my way.

Not sure I'd try that in Roslyn! Definitely not in NYC!!! I used to ride without a helmet as well, but when my kids got to riding age I bit the bullet so they wouldn't have a non-helmet-wearing-dad as an excuse! Same thing happened with skiing. So now it is all about sporting the right helmet!

I hate helmets. I resent being told that I have to wear one. Besides...They completely destroy any Mojo that you may have going at the time. On my Harley I ride until I have to switch to the emergency tank. No windshield please. It looks too .....put a word in for me. For the tough rides...a shooter and a cigar....rare meat....Doobie Brothers. I also enjoy flipping off the douche bags that cut me off !! Diane won't ride with me any more. She used to be a biker chick until I scared her.

Times have changed and the obstacles in place where most rides take place cry for a helmet; it is something I just do not like because hats mess with my hair -- really. Riding in open airway always be something to enjoy. I also think you can see things from a different perspective than on foot.

A great place in Westchester to ride a bike is along the Old Croton Aqueduct trailway. It goes from the Croton Dam (in Croton, NY) all the way down into the Bronx. Spectacular views of the Hudson (particularly in the cold weather when the leaves are off the trees), Palisades, and charming little houses. You can park along the trail and start riding. It's about 99% flat, as the system (completed in 1842) relied 100% on gravity and is considered one of the great marvels of 19th century engineering. Check out parking areas that are convenient, and start pedaling!

I never really ride bikes, but like motorcycles, I would imagine on LI it could be quite dangerous. It's hard to get to work without coming across someone who should be forcibly removed from the roads
