Teach Your Children Well

One day last week, I was at the tail end of my commute but it was very crowded. Two trains hit the 5th Avenue station within minutes of each other and so there was barely room to walk.

As the group started slowly climbing the stairs, I noticed a man somewhat ahead of me struggling to climb. He was moving slowly and the people around him were clearly annoyed. As he reached the top of the stairs he stopped to rest.

A woman with a young child was climbing behind him. And that’s when I heard it. She turned to her son and said, “Billy, this man is struggling to climb the stairs. Let’s go over and ask him if he needs some help.” And they did.

Our children learn from the example of those around them. On this particular day, a young child learned a valuable lesson from his compassionate mother.

Well done.

Setting an example with words and actions (and inaction) are key.

And if we all carried ourselves as if there were a child next to us for us to guide, mentor and lead by example, we'd be the better for it.

Thanks, Nancy, for passing this on. As I think of the adults who inspire me today, it occurs to me that they got an inkling, at an early age, of the joy of contributing. And it's never too late.

Sometimes I take an early train out of the city. It's an express (28 minutes) to my stop, and there's a severely handicapped older woman I've seen many times getting off the train and taking the elevator up to ground level. I happened to be standing at the same door as she, and the conductor asked me to help her get upstairs and into a cab. Which of course I did.

She was extremely grateful, asked for my name, and thanked me profusely. I felt like an 11-year-old Boy Scout (which I was) helping the proverbial "little old lady" cross the street.

There are numerous opportunities in life for us to be better people...take all of them.
