Gym Time

I am not spending enough time in the gym. It’s really that simple. With a long work day and worse, a commute on both ends, time to get to the gym during the week just doesn’t seem to be happening.

I know I am not the only one with this problem. We all struggle with not having enough time in the day.

For those of you who have figured out how to add exercise to your busy routine, how have you done it? Any suggestions for me?

I make an appointment with myself 5 days a week. Mostly Monday nights, either Tuesday and Thursday morning or night depending upon my schedule, Wednesday is Zumba at 8pm which is so much fun, and Saturday/Sunday is Zumba at 10:15 or 10:30.
Go to your local gym or buddy up. Find out the schedules and classes the gym offers and hours of operations for the machines. I find that I'm able to master my schedule and the gym's classes 80% of the time. I sometimes turn down client meetings for gym appointments especially if the class is only offered 1x a week like Boot Camp on Monday nights. I use that to start my week off. To offset unexpected meetings, I make up for it on alternate days that I might not work out like Thursdays or Saturdays. Or if I can't control the schedule and need to exercise, I make sure to walk to a desk instead of call if its interoffice, take the stairs instead of elevators, walk the city and use the subways in sneakers that I take with me, etc.

Fit it in wherever you can, Morning, Evening, take a walk at lunch. Find a gym near the office and go right after work, you'll miss the traffic ride home. So many DVD's you can get and do it at home. You can have different work out times during the week. I put mine in my calander. I prefer mornings so it is done, and it sets my mood for the day. A regular time is optimal because it becomes habit, although, any movememnt any time is beneficial. Stay Healthy!

I downloaded the app "7 Minute Workout Challenge" Available on any device. It's is a series of 12 moves that you work 30 seconds and rest 30 seconds. It works out every muscle group. The only equipment you need is a wall and a chair. I find the moves and still are the same as when I worked with a personal trainer.

Find a gym near the office and diary dedicated weekend time. I try to make my Tues eve and Sat morn full court games inviolate.

I think I shared this before. I tape my favorite trashy television shows and only "allow" myself to watch them while on the treadmill.

I go 3x a week and I have a business to run. I used to go to a class from 8-9 am, and when that teacher developed a drinking problem and couldn't get in on time, I switched to another that starts at 5:30. Making a commitment to a teacher saying you will show up and having friends in the classes are what keep me going. I have been doing this for 35 years. And of course not having to buy larger size clothing!

I've been going to the gym since 1977, 4 to 5 days a week. The best was running on the tread mill for an hour a day at lunch 1984-90; have also done it at 6:00pm. Combined with core body training it the most important part of my day. It's a matter of priorities and this deserves top billing. Otherwise, it's all down hill from here.

I was going to the gym and dancing regularly until a few months ago. While I walk to appointments whenever possible and take stairs whenever they're available; it isn't enough. I'm with you Nancy, I need to make a new commitment to taking care of myself and feeling better.

By the number of comments you received, I'd say that you hit a nerve. Suddenly, I don't feel as guilty about not working out enough. I go every Saturday morning for 2 hours, one of which is with a trainer, and one of my business partners and I walk around Stamford for about an hour, but for the past three weeks, I've been battling flu and other maladies, so haven't been doing as much as I should.

As my uncle who is an 82-year-old doctor still practicing full-time says, "You do what you can."

It may be that you don't really like the gym/treadmill. I get up every a.m. and throw myself outside and walk (and if my knees want run a little) a couple of miles (or one mile if I have less time) and it is invigorating, refreshing, communing with nature and big sky. After a while, it hurts more to not go outside in the a.m., even if it is raining, because I am hooked.
