Man-Bag

Eve carries her whole life in her handbag.  I am amazed when she pulls out bandaids, alcohol wipes, benedryl, eyeglass cleaner wipes, tylenol, tweezers,  a thermometer, small screwdriver, Qtips, a small flashlight, toothpicks, dental floss and the list goes on.   She would have done really well on Let's Make a Deal.   I tease her about it  and can't imagine why she would always want to lug around so much stuff, but the bandaids have come in handy, I must admit.

My list of carry arounds is pretty short.  I have keys, my wallet, money, train pass, MetroCard, reading glassses and iPhone.  Still, all of that juggling around in my pocket can be annoying, not to mention looking bulky.  What are men to do?

Well, for me, the answer is the sport jacket.  It has plenty of pockets for everything.  But I don't always want to wear a sport jacket, and I am at a loss.

My father had an answer for this.  He had a man bag.  It was a nice small leather bag with a strap and he carried it with him all the time.  The man bag never really caught on.  I am not sure why.  I think it is time to bring it back.  Then I can carry my own bandaids.

Will it become the item that identifies your status? Like will you buy it at Target or Botega Venetta? It would be nice not to have to carry stuff also for you guys. To everything Evie carries I now have to add hearing aid batteries to my bag.

My man bag I have been using for more years than I will admit to, I carry over 100 cards of people I network with ! I also have room for my 50 cards. Mark Krieger GC LI Healthcare

Don, my hero! Not withstanding the derision of my grandchildren, manifesting a sort of chauvision to the female only permission to carry a bag, I have lived with the luxury of carrying a man bag for years. Having experieced the evolution from a briefcase for papers to a sensible way to carry a telephone, glasses, keys and whatever I can fit into the bag. Gentlemen, unite! It is Ok to carry a manbag.

According to Jerry Seinfeld, it's acceptable if "It's European!" (That was in the 1990s....)

There was a time I used a bag mainly since I hat to use my pockets for much. When I switched to what a late colleagues called "Corey's Rolling Research Wagon
just before we started a meeting at Crain's editorial board, I relied on that bag less often. Part of the reason I moved away: straps broke and in bags that were sturdy I disliked the compartments. When I play ball or go to the pool in the summer, I often used my sports bags which has suitable compartments. When I carry my computer without the "...Wagon" I use a shoulder bag which allows me to throw in other items. Also my car includes backups of items that might otherwise be carried, including all-important business cards.

My man bag is my briefcase. Holds everything I need. No one bats an eye.
