Cameras Around Us

I was on line in the bagel store and noticed the fixtures in the ceiling. Video cameras in the bagel store. I wondered why. I hadn't heard of any robberies. Was the owner keeping an eye on the employees?

Cameras tracking (and ticketing) red lights and speed in school zones. A good idea for safety, although I am skeptical of the motivation, especially when municipalities are considering camera fine revenues in their budgets.

Surveillance cameras in Times Square, all major public places, even elevators.

Cameras -- being watched -- have become a fact of life. And how about watching? Do you install the nanny cam or camera to watch grandma and the home health aide?

One assumes that if you do nothing “wrong”, you don't have to think about the cameras everywhere. I am not so sure.....

I have a cousin who's business is installing business telephone and video surveillance systems. The surveillance portion of his business is busier than ever. Apparently, people like the idea of being able to see what's going on in their business, even their home, from their mobile device. Cameras are everywhere. I've stopped leaving my apartment without makeup. LOL

We had an incident with our co-op recently, and although we have surveillance cameras inside, and one recorded a lot of the incident, we needed more for the police. The family across the street from us just restored their house and included a multitude of cameras outside. Lucky for us, one of them watched the intruders as they walked to our building entrance, before they covered their heads. The tape is given to the NYPD.

Most of these cameras are for security and crime prevention purposes, so if you are not doing anything wrong, why would it concern you? I personally like to wave hello when I see one!

I do that too! I just didn't want to admit it. :)

Cameras have been a part of our life, especially since 9/11/01. From terrorist attacks to simple shoplifting to traffic reports on our roads, it has become a way of life to track nearly every activity we do in a public place. I am just wondering when it will invade our private space. I guess that is why Drop Cam and the like were invented. We can't seem to get enough of ourselves. Selfies made live...

cameras can convict or exonerate - BUT: don't judge too quickly : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2-BfThJI6g

I'd like to meet the person who does nothing wrong ;)

And I think you are being to kind on the traffic revenue issue. I don't believe that there was a significant enough problem with people running red lights to implement such cameras so that massive numbers of people can get hammered with not sitting at red lights for three seconds before turning right. It is immoral.

Years ago, upon learning that satellites could read license plates numbers, I was spooked. It was scary. That's one side of the coin.

Recently, similarly to Dana's story...maybe it's the same street... A woman was accosted. Luckily, or for the predator, unluckily, a new celebrity tenant on the block had cameras installed when he renovated.
