Following a summertime tradition, last night after dinner Bill and I went for ice cream to our local Carvel. As we were sitting outside, all of a sudden I noticed that we were both quiet. Now, the two girls sitting on the bench next to us were not quiet at all but we were doing that thing – you know, admit it, you do it too.

Our ice cream eating experience reminded me of our first date. We had dinner at Lenny’s Clam Bar on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. Dinner was great (I never finished a meal back in those days. Some things really have changed). Conversation was flowing along with some wine. But then, all of a sudden I noticed that we were both quiet. But the couple at the table sitting next to us was not quiet at all. There we were with no choice at all but to observe what was transpiring around us.

Will you admit it? Have you ever found yourself listening to the next table?

Generally something else distracts me from paying attention, unless it become somewhat of a spectacle (and it could). But you started something else -- first dates (and I will not count a drink or coffee meeting to discern whether you will actually take the step of a date, and does the place still exist. It bugs me that the site does no longer exist and the fault lies in my son's grad school. Shelly and I saw Leader of The Pack at The Bottom Line, which remains my fave concert venue.

There was a Cathy cartoon years ago, where she is leaning in to the next table to hear their conversation , and she fell, embarrassed and caught, she asked can you pass the ketshup?
I haven't fallen yet.

Norm: You're dating yourself (and me, too!). EF Hutton was absorbed minimum twenty years ago, if not more.

I do my best never to listen in to other people's conversations in a restaurant. Our first date was at an Italian restaurant in the suburbs of Buenos Aires in 1988, and my wife (well, she wasn't then...) dipped her puffy sleeves into the tomato sauce.
