Soccer Fever

Do you have it? We do in our house. Of course, we had soccer fever even before this year’s World Cup, as both my step-daughter and step-son are soccer players. Watching the U.S. play on the world stage has, so far, been incredible. Watching the U.S. finally beat Ghana, as a result of a goal scored by a sub was amazing.

Even Google has soccer fever. If you googled anything in the past week, you’ve seen the Google doodles depicting the World Cup. And, of course, with Google doodles comes controversy. The internet exploded last week when Google doodle depicted the word “Google” imbedded in a series of buildings called favelas-a term for slum in Brazil-as a symbol of the games (the letter “L” kicked a soccer ball against the side of the buildings). Google users immediately began expressing concerns about the doodle on Twitter, some calling it “poor taste” and others arguing that slums should not be used to celebrate the World Cup. Some users, however, jumped to Google’s defense, saying that soccer has long been a large part of the community in favelas and it's use was appropriate.

I have seen World Cup games on every television in every restaurant I have been in since the games began. The world seems to have soccer fever. Do you?

We don't watch every game; but have been catching several this year. Even if we weren't interested, there's a rooftop bar down the street televising the games. It would have been impossible not to turn on the game last night with all the cheering we could hear in our 24th floor apartment.

Marisa does.
I watched much of the game v. Ghana since I attended a political fundraiser with a client (and Gotham member Miguel Freire) at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria where many patrons were there just to watch the game.
I pull for USA and check the scores and was disappointed to learn of a tie last night (though the first score I saw had US down 1-0).

I was captain of our varsity soccer team and I have to admit that I have trouble watching it unless it is a big event like the World Cup or the Olympics. I have been hearing for 40 years how soccer is on the rise and is the next up and coming sport in America. I remember watching Giorgio Chinaglia and the Cosmos. I remember watching Shep Messing and the Arrows. It is not a sport made for America and our short and getting shorter attention span.

Otherwise, it was an awesome and riveting game. We will find out if it was devastating, but the guy in the middle who dogged it getting back on that last goal...OUCH! Great play by Portugal, but he should have been covered.

I'm definitely 'feverish' as is my family...don't understand how the brackets work so if Colombia has to play USA I'm in a pickle! Rooting for both :)
