Family

Saturday was my husband’s annual cousin’s club. Every year in June, all of the relatives from my mother-in-law’s side of the family get together at our house. The cousins begin arriving at about 12:30 and each brings their own picnic lunch and beverages. We provide the location, pool, hopefully sunshine, and the bathrooms (a definite necessity).

Even though this was my tenth cousin’s club, I am still a relatively new member of the family. The length of time I have been in the family, however, is irrelevant. I found myself walking from table to table easily. At each table, I readily joined in  the conversation, whether it was relatives catching up with one another, reminiscing about events that occurred many many years ago, or just talking about current events. During each conversation there was always a lot of laughter, even when the reminiscing involved painful events.

To me, family is comforting. What is it to you?

Willa: Family is history. When we get together, we remember those that are no longer here and enjoy all the new additions. It is a continuing lineage and you realize what came before you and what will continue after you and there is great comfort in that.

Alexis- Family means a common bond, shared traditions and a sense of security. It is something I was thrilled to be a part of as a child, an adult and now as a parent.

Rona, we have known each other so long -- I know how important family is to you. I agree with Fred. Family is everything. Makes you feel like you always belong. Great blog and great tradition. Way to go Guras.

When I was a kid, there were tons of great uncles and aunts, their children (my parents' generation) and grandchildren, and we used to see a lot of them on a regular basis. Fast forward to today, and we're a relatively sparse bunch, but quality over quantity prevails. One of my second cousins married the (Argentine) kid who sat next to me for three years in Spanish class-- small world.

Family is probably the most valuable thing on Earth. My family welcomed my wife into our family with such love that I'd have to say it changed my life.

Family matters but I view Family in a sense beyond mere blood relations which remains important.
