Red Light Cameras

Red light cameras are showing up everywhere. The cameras that are at intersections which are coordinated with the traffic lights to photograph the license plates that go through red lights or commit other violations (like rolling through a right turn on red).
Recent reports are that, after a few years since being introduced, revenues from the red light cameras are down and accidents are also down. It makes sense.
But certain government bodies may not be so happy that the red light cameras seem to be working. These bodies grew dependent upon the revenues from the fines generated by the red light cameras. Now they face fiscal shortfalls.
The attention on the revenue deficit makes me wonder whether the cameras were first installed for safety reasons or as revenue enhancements. (Consider that the companies that provide the cameras also share in the fine revenues and the issues get even more murky.)
I’ve paid my share of red light camera fines and I can't help but accept that I am a safer driver with the awareness of the new technology. The fines serve as a deterrent and, to my mind, that’s how it should be --- not that the government has a financial incentive to catch me.

Maybe they should install cameras in the offices of the politicians.

I am currently fighting a ticket that is not even mine--not even my plate # nor my car. The powers that be have asked me to prove it...yeh ok. DMV laughed when I asked for proof. It is now on my credit report.
I agree on all points of safety and disagree with Fred, we are reposnsible for ourselves. I've rec'd my share of tickets also for not "waiting" long enough before I turned right on red. Come on, I don't know the exact amount I should wait...but I certainly don't roll...
I like Cayce's idea.
Although my sister dated the guy who "invented" these camera's. I can assure you safety was not priority.
You can only imagine how often his name comes up in conversation....lol

Goal is prevention but sometimes fees and fines becomes alternatives to straight tax hikes.

In NYC the parking violation bureau and their agents work for the Fiance Department, NOT the Police Department. Safety is a concern, right after raising funds.

Ben-I would say that the reason is much more revenue driven over safety driven
Fred-I also think that the vast majority of this revenue is created from "rolling" red light violations, which I don't believe helps with safety
Corey-seems like an "Ends Justify The Means" philosophy ;)
