The weather

Over the past couple of weeks I have done a totally unscientific study of how the recent long winter has affected businesses.

There's the obvious ones that were/are dramatically affected;

Nursery...sales are down compared to last year
Pest control company...owner says it's like we're a month behind.
Awning company...two months delayed in sales/service calls

Professional service businesses have been affected as well. Even though most are not weather related, across the board, service businesses are busier now. Over the past month we, my company, have seen an increase in interactions.

Judging by the increase in activity, it appears that a lot of different types of businesses have been affected by the long winter. Has yours?

We were as busy as last Winter (Superstorm Sandy). My business came to the aid of many who had the unfortunate pipe break, ice dam, puff back, etc.

Besides the obvious of too many lost snow days, the only person who was never affected because he's able to make up for lost time is my hairdresser. Go figure.
I've also noticed an increase in business...sunshine does a lot for all of us :)

The weather always hurts the pest control business ,the snow and rain make it hard to male a living. 20 years ago termites would fly end of February , then 10 years ago it moved to march. Now end of April . There is definitely something going on . By watching the bugs you know something isn't right. Global warming maybe. WWW.THEBUGSSTOPHERE Steve free from the bug man says

Interesting Mitch. My business has gotten pretty busy in the past two weeks. Althought I hate to jinx it.

A new pair of snow boots kept me going this winter. Interestingly, my open houses were well attended even with all the snow we had. Business could have been better this winter; but the lack of inventory was more to blame than the weather.

Speaking of global warming (see the post from "Anonymous" above), please read this important Rolling Stone article, pass it on and join me and many others for the NYC March in September! http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/a-call-to-arms-an-invitation-to-demand-action-on-climate-change-20140521
