The Old Fashioned Way

Do you bank on line?  I do it the old fashioned way.  By check.  My checkbook is a binder with three checks and stubs per page.  Every year or so I take out the stubs, clip them, and put them in the bottom of a drawer.

My father used to pay his bills out of his checkbook sitting in the dining room table at night after dinner.  He also had a large binder.  One night I refused to go to sleep.  He warned me to get back to bed, but I kept coming out of my room.  He finally said, well, if you want to stay up, then you are staying up.

He made me sit with him in the dining room while he wrote out his checks and did his paperwork.  At first I thought this was great.  Time with dad all alone!  And I was impressed with whatever it was he was doing, it just seemed so in charge and organized.  That lasted about five minutes.  I became bored and sleepy.  Every time I put my head down on the table and started to doze he would shake me and wake me up.  It was awful.  I was so tired and just wanted to go to bed, which I guess was the whole point.

But I learned how to write a check that night.  I think it will become a lost art though.  Soon no one will be writing checks anymore.  Soon it will all be digital.  Who will teach me how to pay my bills then?

I have a $1,000,000 check you wrote me. Good time to cash it?

I sometimes write and record a check but mostly use a file to record the data; occasionally I cut checks on line.

My husband does our personal banking on-line. At the office, we use a checkbook. My office manager, who pays the bills, refuses to use an online system. He still doesn't trust it.

I do both and I must tell you it is exhausting. I spoke with a rep at CapitalOne yesterday who advised that two cards should be used for paying bills to the credit card (which I do too for the miles). She said if you use one card just to pay your online bills than if you lose it you will immediately know who to call to let them know there is a new card to charge to....makes sense to me...I really need to get organized!

My dad also taught me how to write checks. He was very precise and I think of him every time I write a check for something I want a hard copy record of (like charitable donations, taxes etc.) Yesterday, I saw someone who somewhat looked like him (but my dad was more handsome). It made me realize how much I miss him. Thanks for the memory, Don!
