Are you social

Roughly 80% of Americans have internet access and engage in social media. We post details about ourselves, share this information with friends and strangers, do research, and walk around with our head down looking at email, photos, and more.

A lot of people say that the online communities promote increased interaction with friends and family; offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to educational support and materials; facilitate social and political change; and disseminate useful information rapidly.

Others say that these sites prevent face-to-face communication; waste time on frivolous activity; alter children’s brains and behavior making them more prone to ADHD; expose users to predators like pedophiles and burglars; and spread false and potentially dangerous information.

How do you feel?

And If you think the opposition to social media is confined to adults...watch this video...it's really good.

Saw the video. Upsetting, but we are hooked.

Saw the video previously and it is true. We have become obsessed with out technology to the point where very limited Face to Face communication occurs. I am finding hard, socially, to even have someone call me anymore. Texting is the preferred method. Very unsocial in my opinion and will lead to many missed opportunities as the video point out.

Totally agree with Fred...although I'm trying to detach during evening hours (but, I'll confess "it ain't easy")

I saw this video as well; and agree with Fred, it's upsetting. Social media has it's place and is fun; however, it doesn't take the place of being face-to-face. When I'm with other people, I don't look at email, texts or answer phone calls. I keep my phone handy in case of an emergency, my mother-in-law is 91 years old so I would answer if she called; but unless it's an emergency, it can wait.

Social media is a tool. I use it to stay in touch with people I might not often see; it can help humanize you to people you deal with professionally. I have even seen it help bring together relatives who were estranged. If it were not there the people who misuse it would do other "interesting" things.

I use social media to promote 10/10. I'd like to attend a few meeting and see what I can learn.
