The Whiskey Taste Test

Thinking of going to Ireland this summer, and being a whiskey lover, I thought it would be a good idea to sample Jameson Irish Whiskey.   As I learned from having Pilsner in Prague, it is always best to have what is homemade.   Eve went out and bought a small bottle, and one thing led to another and we ended up planning an experiment.  A blind whiskey taste test.

We lined up seven bottles of whiskey, chosing these because that is what I had in the house.  Two single malt scotch whiskeys, Laphroaig and Lagavulin; three bourbons, Jack Daniels, Bulleit, and Bulleit 10 year aged; a High West bourbon-rye blend (called Son of Bourye); and Jameson.  Each were pourded into separate glasses on which I taped what they were onto the bottom of the glass.  Then we began tasting, which also happened to be after dinner out that included a martini and a glass of wine.  Maybe not the best timing.

Eve made it through five samples and then had to quit.  I think the Scotch did her in.  I sampled them all and thought briefly about vomiting but managed to keep my cool.

In the end, the winners were the bourbons.  I am not surprised, bourbon was always my favorite.  The scotchs tasted far stronger and harsher than the smoother bourbon.  The High West was awful in comparison and the Jameson just not impressive and lacking flavor or depth.

We may try a blind vodka taste test next.  Any wagers on what will win?

A taste test with Vodka? Make sure you put water in one glass and also use the new cheap
one I think called Wodka. And what are you doing with all that liquor in the house? And is the word pourded or was that the drink talking....and Fred's right...one thing led to another...how about a blog on that.

I've been drinking bourbon for a couple of years now and have come to love it. I know that you did not like the High West, but they make a rendezvous rye that is very good. I have the Bulleit 10 year and it was ok. My new favorite which I highly reccomend is Noah's Mill. Lots of explosive flavor. And lastly, if you can find a bottle and are willing to pony up the big bucks every bourbon drinker should experience the sensation if drinking Pappy's van Winkle 20 year old. Less pop, cause it's lower proof but super smooth, because it's lower proof. Actually any year Pappy's is good. To me there is a lingering finish that leaves you begging for more. Enjoy!
