Messrs. Welch and Murrow

When I was a boy I was made aware of the "Red Scare" (fear of the spread of Communism). It was an abounding tsunami of hate and recrimination abroad in the land.

For instance, people were called before congressional committees, found in contempt and jailed for refusing to name names of alleged communists or "fellow travelers."

Most prominent in this "witch hunt" were Senator Joseph McCarthy and his committee counsel, the notorious Roy Cohn, who held hearings, for example, concerning suspected lax security in the US Army. During the hearings Army counsel Joseph Welch was inspired, by a disparaging McCarthy allegation as to a member of his staff, to famously respond "Have you no sense of decency".

This was a turning point, as CBS commentator Edward R. Morrow seized upon the moment to call out McCarthy on national TV in March 1954 saying, inter alia: This is no time to keep silent...we can deny our heritage and our history, but we can not escape responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of the republic to abdicate his responsibility...Cassius was right 'The fault dear Brutus is not in the stars, but in ourselves."

Amazingly, over 70 years later, Roy Cohn's dark influence still abounds in the land.

Where have you gone messrs. Welch and Murrow? A needy nation turns its lonely heart to you!

A form of history repeats itself in some fashion. Thanks for this history lesson!

No wonder - Roy Cohen was trump’s mentor.
BTW George Cluny coming to Broadway as Murrow.
Rosalia Ruberto

Wonder how much longer people will be able to speak out on the air waves or in print?
Paul Napolitano

It seems like everybody knows a joke that I am missing. Can somebody please enlighten me as to what this conversation is about?

Where were the sentinels of justice when all the Conservative voices were being cancelled ? Stories proven to be fake and investigations and incarcerations by modern day pratorean guards like James Comey, ambushed, fabricated and perpetrated lies and misinformation that ultimately hurt both parties and changed the course of history in an immutable way that brought us to where we are today, needing another outsider to peel the layers of the onion exposing rot, corruption and immoral behaviors on both sides of the aisle. Yes, where does this go next ? One thing is certain is that change never comes easy.

Quoting Marilyn Price, speaking up never goes out of style. The process we are encountering risks becoming a modern-day witch hunt where efficiency is prioritized over justice, humanity, and freedom of speech (as Rosalia noted). Last night's news commented that it was overlooked that Canada is part of the UK.

I like Ben's positivity and RIck's touching on the important issues. Thnx to Fred for using your age to remind us of the 1950's and the lesson that it presented.

History was resorted to and history is being written...

It's a different dynamic today. Trump and his minions have no shame. Moreover, when an outspoken anchor says something Trump doesn't like, he threatens to have Musk take out the offending broadcastor. I feel we're inching towards a coup and like the frog in boiling water, we'll wake up one morning to a president for life. After all, he promised his base that this would be their last election.

Fred, this is a very interesting blog. It had me thinking and googling for a long time. I checked. Apparently, the McCarthy hearings were televised gavel to gavel. I find it very frightening that certain news outlets, i.e. The Associated Press, are being banned from the oval office. That is a very slippery slope. I'm unsure how opposing voices can be heard when there are restrictions on the media.
