Under the Weather

Under the Weather

I’ve been under the weather for a few days, not unlike many others around me.  I’ve had three meetings cancelled in the last week alone because someone else was under the weather. I suppose it was my turn.

But that started me thinking about this particular phrase.  What does it mean and where did it originate?

With a little research I learned that the idea goes back to the late 1800s.  When a sailor wasn’t feeling well, they would go below to a lower deck away from the weather to rest and recover.  This way he was “under the weather.”

Just a thought for a Tuesday morning.

Now there's a good conversation starter for me to use when people tell me they are sick.

Good to know. I was just wondering where that came from. Hurry back!

Never knew that. Funny what will lead to looking something up that you've heard all your life. Feel better soon.
