Pencil to Paper

Pencil to Paper

In a recent telephone conversation, the attorney on the other side of the dispute offered to draft the document reflecting our agreement to resolve the matter.
“I’ll put pencil to paper.” He said.
I haven’t heard that phrase in a while and it got me thinking about the creative process.
I wondered whether he would actually put “pencil to paper” or whether he would take to his keyboard.
I’m old school and still find myself putting “pencil to paper” when drafting or composing anything longer than a quick email … or a blog. I envision the connection between my brain, my arm and my hand and it’s worked for many years and I’m not about to change.
I recognize that, for others, the process never involves a pencil or paper, but I’ll keep the pencils nearby with the pad.

often times I will write down a few key points I want to make putting pencil to paper and then start to draft an email on the keyboard. In todays world they call that "Hybrid"

I use whatever makes sense in the moment.. often that means some e-device. Sometimes it means printing out and marking up rather than editing on the device first.

I am still pencil/pen to paper to organize my thoughts and to take notes. Studies show that there is a difference between how we process information depending on how we record it. Once I get my thoughts together in a rough form I start using the computer and that is where I do my editing. Whatever works for people is fine by me.

I use my computer mostly, on a Word Document which has spell and grammar check as well as ease of editing. I them save it to My Documents and now have a permanent electronic file. I can then copy or attac it as needed. But I do take all.my notes with Pen and paper when on an appointment, conference calls or training. I am just not a fast typer and prefer to take notes on paper.

I like this. Was told by a straight A student in college to rewrite my notes from every class, would improve mastery of the material. It worked. When I'm writing, I do a combination of keyboard and hand writing notes during the "info-gathering" step before sitting for the first draft! Excellent topic Ben, thx for sharing!

I also make some notes on paper before writing anything detailed. I also take notes via pen and paper when on calls or zoom meetings and in person. Sometimes, I'll transcribe the notes on the computer or scan them and put them with the appropriate client folder. I avoid composing anything lengthy on my phone as much as possible.
