One Girl

Baseball season started yesterday with the composition of the middle school team. This year, sixteen boys and one girl.

The girl on the team has been playing since she was little and really, really wanted to play on the boys team. She had to pass a physical test that the boys did not but she didn’t care. She wanted to play.

Last year, she tried but didn’t make it onto the team. This year, success.

I have known this young woman since she was just a little girl and have always been impressed with her determination (although I do worry some about how she may be treated by some of the boys). I am confident she is going places.

The best player on one of my Little League teams was Amy Murstein.

Come watch Gotham's softball teams. The women are better players than some of the men and know how to play the game better. For example, they know where to hit the ball with runners in scoring position. Many of them played softball in college.

She could be President of the US one day with that type of determination and drive. Either that or a professional baseball player :)

Love it. I used to coach middle school baseball and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

I am baffled at the thought of a physical test in a sport that really doesn't have any physical requirements?!?

Although there are sports where I would have reservations about girls competing directly against boys, baseball is not one of them. I also would not worry that much about how she is treated by the boys. Barring an absolutely abysmal environment allowed by a bad coach, my experience has been that the guys are often polite and even protective of someone like that. When I was coaching JV ice hockey, we had a girl on our team and we actually had to make a point of telling the guys not to overreact to her getting hit.

When I managed in Little League, softball, there was a girl who played hardball but Williamsport rules did not allow her to play in the playoffs towards the Little League World Series. As I recall it she pitched and hit well.
