Finding My Work-out Way

Categories
Lifestyle

I have admitted in past blogs that I am not an athletic person. My idea of a work-out is to walk the treadmill as I watch a trashy television show that I have taped; usually an episode of The Real Housewives. As I have gotten older, however, I have recognized the increased importance of exercise for me.

Recently, I increased my time on the treadmill and, consequently watching trashy television. I then decided to try a different method of exercise, so I enrolled in a Zumba class with friends. After two classes, I found myself making excuses not to attend. In talking with a family member-who’s an exercise fiend--I told her about my Zumba experience and my dawning realization that perhaps I just didn’t like Zumba. Her insightful response, “Just remember, the only exercise that works is the exercise that works for you.”

I think I’m going to try yoga next. What works for you?

Rona, the exercise I liked a lot was martial arts, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, and kickboxing. After about 3 years I had enough, so I joined a gym. All the machines got boring fast. I discovered the pool, and as a none swimmer I just took some water classes and started water walking. Soon enough I realized I want to learn to swim. A few private classes later I was swimming. this was over 10 years ago. I love swimming and everything about it.

It takes a bit of time to get into Zumba if you have never done it before. I suggest that before you abandon the idea, let me give you my Zumba DVD when I see you next. It will teach you the basic steps so that you can go into Zumba feeling like you might have a good time with it. If after a while, you aren't getting anything, then you know at least you tried. It took me about a year. Now I'm loving it and can't wait. I burned over 1000 calories yesterday and I wasn't even at full speed yet.

Being a hockey goalie keeps me athletically in shape, but doesn't get me the cardio I need. I need to work hard around that to keep pounds off, but I hate the monotony of running, etc. I am trying to get myself set up with an exercise bike in front of a TV so I can get in shape as I watch the Mets develop their youth into the perennial powerhouse that is awaiting just around the corner.

Knowing me as long as you do, you will laugh out loud right about now -- I really like my time at the gym. I have a routine (bicycle, eliptical, treadmill, some weight machines) and I watch tv or listen to music, catch up on emails (on the bicycle only!). And, Bill and I usually go together so we get some nice couple time too. Did you ever think you would hear ME talk about liking the gym?

I hate to admit that I have never gotten into the"exercise zone". I do have a personal trainer that comes to my office...

Sports. Full-court basketball one eve and one weekend each week. In the summer add swimming and volleyball weekend afternoons and often a second morning of hoops. When I think about it. I still handle the snow shoveling and lawn work, in large part because of exercise component.
