Car Trouble

Categories

In the last two weeks I have had car trouble. First, I was rear ended in a four car chain reaction crunch  precipitated by a Snapple truck (Snapple Crackle and Pop!) which caused extensive damage to both the front and rear of my car. Then last weekend, I took the substitute rental car and parked in a lot adjoining the restaurant where we were dining.  When we returned the spot was empty. A vanished car (rental or otherwise) is a surreal shocking sight! This is the second time that I've experienced what I call stolen car syndrome, as a few years ago my car was stolen off my driveway on my birthday. Some present!

This time, as it ends up, the car wasn't stolen. As I was reporting the car theft to the police department on my cell phone I noticed a tow truck pulling another car out of the lot. The tow truck driver told us that the owner of the Harborview Shopping Center (Roslyn) parking lot had contracted with his towing company to clear his spaces filled by non customers.

A word to the wise!  Pay attention to those signs that mention a towing company. It was an expensive lesson learned.

I once hit a parked car on a crowded street. A lot of people saw it. I wrote the following note and left it on the damaged car's windshield. "Everyone who is watching me thinks I'm leaving you my name, address and insurance info but I'm not."

That's awful about your multi-car crash...reminds me of the time several years ago when I was Car 3 in a 7-car chain collision on the FDR Drive. 1 + 2 had collided, I stopped in time, but #4 crashed into me, crashing me into them. Then came #5, #6, and #7. Bumper cars, anyone? (When I came to, 2 and 4 had taken off.) I hope you're feeling all right, car repairs notwithstanding.

Just this week I received a phone call from a client who relayed the following story: she got off of the Port Jeff ferry to find her car was not in the spot where she had parked it. She called the police to report the car stolen and her soon to be ex-husband to pick her up. As she is giving the report to the cop, her soon to be ex-husband pulls up in her car. He told her he happened to "find" the car parked in a different lot, several blocks away and tried to convince her that she had parked it where he "found" it. You just can't make this stuff up.

I finally just had a case dismissed where 3 people intentionally caused an accident on the Southern State trying to collect disability. People told me not to worry about it and that my insurance wouldn't go up, but luckily I was pro-active in fighting it and compiled evidence quickly. At a certain point either they or their lawyers gave up and stopped responding to court requests. Do you know it still took over a year from the time they stopped responding to have the case thrown out? Unbelievable!

My cousin told me last week after a night out drinking in Bay Ridge he decided to walk home.---When he went to pick up his car the next day it was gone (Saturn)--so upset because he is back in school and had 1,500 dollars worth of books in his car.
Still, we couldnt understand why anyone would want an old Saturn.
After a little detective work we found out that his car was towed because it was in the way of a movie shoot. Apparently that's not uncommon in Bklyn.
Can't make this stuff up.
Glad your ok Fred!!

Didn't know about the car accident. You're all right, right?

When I worked in the City Council I developed laws regulated towing and booting of cars in private lots. It included signage requirements. Some Mall owners just outsourced the entire operation and did not get any money; their only interest was to keep the lot free of cars parking there and not patronizing their tenant's business. 1997 Local Law 88; 1995 Local Law 24. When I had a business breakfast Wednesday, I also faced a movie shoot (of course they told me after I fed the meter. I told the person I would not be long and I knew darn well the shoot was already finished (seen enough of them and I also knew where I parked would not be in any street level shoot; the courthouse was the other side of the Jackson Avenue.

Some people will do anything to get in the movies...
Glad you're ambulatory.
