Oh The Places To Go

The New York Times has a story on the first page of the Travel section today on "The 46 Places to Go in 2013."  I like these types of stories, like SKI magazine's list of best new places to ski, so I took at look at the list.

I am not sure why they came up with only 46 places, or stopped there.  Maybe they ran out of ideas, or just ran out of space in which case I wonder which ones they left out.

Number 1 on the list is Rio.  Is that their number 1 place, meaning it is the best, or is it in random order,  I do not know, though putting Paris last makes me think there is no designed order.  But I do know that I would like to go to Rio, and so would Eve, so we count that in.

I see Acccra, Ghana is on the list.  I have been to South Africa, and would go elsewhere on the contitnent.  I would love to climb Mount Kilimanjarno some day though I don't know if it will actually happen.  But I am pretty certain I will not get to Ghana or the other African country on the list, the Republic of Congo.  You have to be careful in those parts, there are lots of rebels and they can be very angry.

A place called The Jesenky in the Czech Republic made the list.  Never heard of that.  But as we will be in Prague this April visiting Emily, I will have to check this out and see if it is worth an excursion.

I started making my own list of the places I have been that I would put on the list.  Like Grindelwald, Switzerland; Rhonda, Spain; and Hackensack, New Jersey.

Time to start making some reservations.

There is a saying about Hackensack. You must say I am going to Hackensack and back. Never go to Hackensack without coming back. I have been to Rio and Hackensack and back. Will send travel tip for both.

Mitch, I think Hackensack was actually #47. Interesting that the only place in New York that made the list was the Adirondacks. Perhaps we have to reach out there for a new Gotham group?

Have to admit most times I pass on the travel section. HHDB's blog made me peek. In the states, I'd like to visit Nashville. Some of the music I still listen to is now based there and even Shelly says she'd like to check out the city. Parts of Italy, Greece and Asia Minor, and Israel will be on the agenda at some point.
For me, and I do not know how this is for others, when I play ball weeknights or weekends, attend a concert, swim or otherwise hang at the pool club (Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day), I am on vacation. Heck listening to this week's selection of Al Kooper's 10 tunes (go to http://www.themortonreport.com/entertainment/music/new-music-for-old-people-professor-longhair-maimou-van-hunt-candi-staton-and-more/index.php?utm_source=Copy+of+Copy+of+Copy+of+Copy+of+Copy+of+Copy+of+Copy+of++NEW+TEMPLATE+-+11%2F16%2F12&utm_campaign=NMFOP+11%2F15%2F12&utm_medium=email) "New Music For Old People" i feel on vacation even if I am posting to the blog. Music can do that for me so that the periods driving this morning to drop off my lastest "e-waste" at Queens Botanical Gardens and then to the open house an elected's new district office, staples for a new USB HUB (the old device with three ports croaked and I needed ports for three printers, two external drives, a turntable, a cooling fan for my MacBook (not necessary but since I have one from pre-Mac life I use it) and a flash drive) and finally back to Bellerose (named "Grand Junction" on FourSquare by my daughter, Marisa) all felt like I was on vacation -- while driving, in part motivated by an email replying to Fred about a tee-shirt he was photographed in, I played a February 24, 1979 Bottom Line Early show by three original members of The Byrds reconstituted as (Roger) McGuinn, (Gene) Clark & (Chris) Hillman (I was at the late show but -- SHHH! -- do not tell Debi Sherman I did not attend the early show because my then law school class mate recorded the early show for me off WNEW-FM -- still have that cassette). The live show opens with a great guitar riff on Chris' "Sad Boy" by Johnne Sambataro (see http://www.davemasonmusic.com/the-band#johnne), includes my fave versions of Dylan's You Aint Goin' Nowhere and The Byrds' hit "I Feel A Whole Lot Better (When You're Gone); there is even a great intro by the late great DJ Pete Fornatale and late a Gene Clark thank you to Pete (I know Odey will appreciate it!). I even sat in my car to wait for Gene's "Backstage Pass" (Ten Feet Away) to conclude after I parked.
At this point in drafting this post, I am playing the last song of the concert set (before the encores). Imagine a really rocking "So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star" which only had Chris and Roger on the original but with Gene's distinctive voice added to close the show and encores of their Byrds hits Tambourine Man, Eight Miles High and Feel A Whole Lot Better and the closer on side two of the McGuinn, Clark and Hillman LP, "Bye Bye Baby" that I heard Roger sing solo and later teamed with Gene for several concerts before they reunited with Chris.

A few recommendations, none of which is in New Jersey:

1. Budapest. Gorgeous, amazing food, everyone speaks fluent English.
2. Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil. http://twistedsifter.com/2010/03/iguazu-falls-10-incredible-facts/ Your mind will be blown, I promise.
3. Galapagos Islands. Go NOW before they restrict tourism which will jack up the price hugely. Life changing.
4. Australia, Great Barrier Reef. The Aussies come in two flavors: Very nice and even nicer. Sydney's gorgeous.
5. The Amalfi Coast and Parma. Parma has the best food in the entire world.
6. Hackensack. NOT!!!
7. Ireland. The place is breathtakingly beautiful, the people are the nicest and they've learned to cook very well.
8. The Cotswolds. The village of Burford alone is worth the trip. You have to rent a car, and I highly recommend an automatic shift one (which costs twice as much, but is a lot safer).
9. Pretty much anywhere in Spain or Italy.
10. Scotland. Among the most beautiful places on the planet.
11. Machu Pichu. Astounding.
