This past weekend, we returned home from Florida and, truth be told, the main reason I wasn't looking forward to the trip centered on a balky knee which I have been suffering.

We flew Delta into the new LaGuardia which challenged my physical condition as the plane always parks at the furthermost gate, requiring a long grueling hike to the Baggage Claim Area and Exit.

Further complicating the situation is the fact that we travel with our beloved Charcoal, a 15 pound Schnoodle, who is required to fly in a small "kennel" which I usually carry on my back like a nap sack after deplaning.

Once on the ground, I girded myself for the ordeal, but then Joanne urged me to release Charcoal and walk her through the airport.  Not knowing whether it was allowed, I took a chance and did so and thereby relieved myself of a 15 pound load.

At this point, anticipation always being worse than reality, the magic happened.  Charcoal, finally released from hours of claustrophobic confinement, was unbridled and began to pull me along by her leash.  Suddenly, I realized the unexpected double benefit and just allowed myself to glide along, enjoying my good fortune to be powered by Charcoal!

Always nice to have an assist. But let me say a word about the new LaGuardia - as beautiful as it is - it’s so not user friendly. The walk from the plane to baggage claim for a start. I could go on- but this is about Charcoal. Man’s best friend.

We were in LaGuardia last night and noticed that they had a doggy relief room right next to the bathroom! It’s no longer a Third World nation like our president said!

Great Charcoal story but you should know that, had you alerted anyone at the curb or check-in or even a flight attendant, wheel chair service is provided for the asking complete with someone to drive you. This also allows you First Class/Express passage through baggage, passport and ticket lines. Charcoal could still run ahead pulling the wheel chair. fyi.

Charcoal helped you to be lighter, more fluid and swift on your feet. I hope that you rewarded her, with a sweet treat.

I'm glad to see you return safely, and I recognize Charcoal's caring for you with our 15 lb Lewis. He's small yet strong, and more than once, I found him pulling me up and along when I was gaining my feet. Europe is ahead of us here in allowing dogs in public places. I don't understand our stalwartness against it.

That was a tailwagger of a story ~ Charcoal is such a blessing, in so many ways! Welcome back to NY to all 3 of you!

Pride goes out the window! I got used to asking to a wheelchair when I had a problem with my hip. Once I discovered how helpful it is, I unabashedly ask for it if I'm faced with a long airport walk and I'm not up to it. I encourage you to go for it!

Brava Paula!!! I discovered it in my twenties when I stubbed a toe on my way out the door at 5:30 AM on route to the airport. By the time I arrived at LGA, my foot could not fit in my shoe. The sky caps summoned a wheel chair. People twice my age were jealous.
