Running Narrative

Running has been part of my personal narrative for decades.  Years ago it was 30 minutes on the “dreadmill” enduring boredom to build strength and endurance.

When I moved to NYC, running became a way to get outside in nature, challenging myself to run all year irrespective of the weather. Never boring - always a source of satisfaction.

I now get to run the often daunting hills of Riverdale; its uneven streets and walkways, and its parks far less curated than Central and Riverside Parks offer new challenges.

I’ve gotten lost and found my way, adding extra unplanned miles backtracking or going in circles. This past weekend I discovered a series of trails along the River and enjoyed quite a Mudder. I appreciate this new benefit of blending exercise and exploration. I have quickly learned my way around this mazelike gem in the  “boogie down Bronx.” (TY Doc Robert)

One thing that has not changed in all these years is that I run alone – charting my own course, deciding time, pace and distance, lost in my thoughts, enjoying the activity on my terms. It’s my time – completely self-indulgent and self- absorbed.

Running is a moving meditation that leaves me relaxed and renewed. There are certainly other ways to relax, renew, exercise and explore. Running remains my choice – something  I do just “for the health of it?”

What do you do JUST FOR YOU no matter what?

My daily walks (m-f) is my time as well. I usually catch up on informative You Tube videos that I enjoy. It also gives me time to plan out my day a bit. Ending with a nice shower gets my ready for the work ahead.

I had been an avid runner for many years. It's very hard on your body, I had a knee injury which ended my running career. I enjoy swimming as well but also had a rotator cuff injury so that became difficult. Signs of aging, I guess.

I cheat. Due to a bad back, I can't run. I go to a high tech digital gym called OsteoStrong Park Avenue. (Member of Gotham NY Health). Osteo is the ultimate bio-hack, specializing in balance, strength and osteogenesis. My strength has increased 128% in one year. My bone density scan says I am Amazon Woman.. I also go on long nature walks.

Love this Shelley! I try and walk 4-5x/week, go to the gym 203x/week and do a few things at home when time is an issue.

I read an article yesterday that creativity is sparked when we are in motion. Your workout schedule explains alot.

Oh Shawn, you are tempting me - so many ways to respond. I will say that form matters as do many other factors when it comes to injuries from exercising. Age is way down the list of issues when it comes to running or swimming. Walking is always a good option.

I don' walk as much as I used to but my "no matter what" activity is trapeze lessons and practice and handstands. Age has nothing to do with it!
