Time for a Good Read

I am ready – and if I’m lucky, maybe I will have a little time to read a book.

I’m afraid I have to admit I don’t remember the last time I had enough free time to read a whole book.  I love to read, but these days tend to read articles, short pieces, magazines, that sort of thing.  I am itching now for a good book.

And so, its survey time!

What was your most recent favorite read and why?

Like you, I have not had the time for a book, so I can't recommend anything now.

I am recommending to everyone a book I recently read, "The Little Liar," by Mitch Albom. It's a novel based on a true holocaust story I had never known about. It's about a Greek village of Jewish people which were wiped out during the Holocaust. It's definitely a difficult subject but the writing style is easy to read, not a long novel. It's a story I believe that everyone needs to know about and it really impacted me. I am telling every reader I know that they have to read this book.

Perhaps consider the “classics” like Dostoyevsky, Voltaire, Beckett, Swift, James, Michener, Tolstoy, Joyce, Hemingway, Camus, Vonnegut, Shakespeare, Fitzgerald, Carson, Salinger, Orwell, Wharton, Lee, Faulkner, Morrison, Updike, Austen, Hawthorne, Nabokov, Woolf, Dickens, Remarque, Alcott, Carroll, Kafka, Wilde, Ellison, Conrad, Lawrence, Hugo, Wright, Roth, and many more. I’ve recently begun to do this. There are reasons they’ve endured over the decades and centuries. But then again, I was an English lit major, and rarely find that the book-of-the-moment can compare to the greats. Perhaps one of these decades I’ll come out of the prior century (centuries) and into the new millennium…. ;^) Google a few authors for a short description of their books, and pick one that grabs you.

Wow, David, you reading all of these? I was an English major too, but I haven't reread my favorites from that time. I'm impressed!

Nancy, like you, I've been reading articles. But my friends recommended The Heaven And Earth Grocery Store, so I'm about to read that. My current favorite, that actually managed to read, is The Girl Who Fell Below The Sea, a fairy story based on Korean folklore. Beautiful, inspiring and easy to read on the plane!

Just finished Remarkably Bright Creatures in my book club. Lovely characters, good plot, and an octopus!
