Live From New York, It's...

In the "pre-monologue" of his first night as host of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon told of how he used to beg his parents to stay up late to watch Johnny Carson.  I'm sure I'm not alone in being able to directly relate to such a story.

He also spoke quite humbly of how he grew up in upstate New York, Saugerties to be exact.  He seems to be one of the most down to earth people in show business, and his tribute to his NY heritage is not only found in the revisited location of the show.  For my entire life, The Tonight Show has been filmed at the NBC studios in Hollywood.  Jimmy Fallon has brought it back to NY and his entire set is literally an homage to the greatest city in the world.

I am in no way comparing him to any of the previous Tonight Show hosts, but there is definitely a different feel to the new show.  There is an energy to it that didn't seem to be present when the Tonight Show originated out of California.  New York City has often been described as its own character in TV shows and movies.  I think that our great city will play an integral role in the success of the newly re-booted version of The Tonight Show.

Erik, I completely agree....it may be that at our age we can directly relate to almost everything he talks about.
So far so good...and yes NY is where it should be :)

Jimmy Fallon is a terrific person. Two years ago he paid the initiation at the Friars for his whole staff as a Christmas present.

That is pretty awesome. Last Night Jerry Seinfeld said in a very subtle and sincere moment that he thought Jimmy was the most "grounded" person he's met in show business.

Love Fallon..such a talent. At the risk of name dropping, an old friend from high school and terrific writer, David Kamp, did a cover story on him for Vanity Fair this month - very exciting! http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2014/02/jimmy-fallon-the-tonight-show-new-york

I liked Leno but am finding myself laughing out loud at Fallon (the hip hop routine with Will smith was great). My favorite comment so far was when he was talking about the opening NY street scene and he said that he had realized that after they finished filming it, all the shots of him were him eating. I thought that was priceless!!!

I like the fact the show is back in NYC. At the same time no one tops Carson and I've found myself not really making any "date" to watch late night TV. Things are cute and nice for chatter afterwards such as the parade of $100s but some of those cameos actually gained by their "payment". Fred's former oracle had a great piece on it which I identify myself with.

I think he is great, and is making it relevant again. I never watched Leno, and referred to it as The Johnny Carson Show with Jay Leno.

Pretty cool that he got Spike Lee to direct it. I still think Summer Of Sam is one of the greatest directed movies ever!
