What is in a name

Sitting with a client in the office the other day, we were going down names on a list. His name is Sebastian and he is from somewhere in South America, I forgot exactly. I have known him for about five years or so. He told me that his name was on the list. No it isn't I told him. Yes, he said, it is right here as he pointed to the name John Gordon or something like that. News to me, but Sebastian had legally changed his name. He wants to act and preferred a John Wayne type name. I thought it was a bad trade. I like Sebastian better. Changing your name though is not necessarily a bad idea. I was not consulted about mine, and if I had been I would have expressed mild disgust. I am not sure where it came from or who I was named after, if anyone. If I could change it, I wonder what I would pick. Quarterbacks have great names, I would consider some of those. But after all I am not a quarterback or an actor and have grown used to the name my parents picked for me. I will just have to keep it.

I was once informed that my signature on a contract was invalid because I had to use my "real name". Talk to my mother about that, I said.

In a world, where one could change anything about him/herself, including reversing to her/himself, a name changes seems pretty mundane task...

Since she was born, I have been repeatedly asked what my daughter's, Calli, real name is. It's Calli.

A lot of Chinese immigrants today change their name and I wonder what its like.Is it a split identity.Of course immigrants have done it for years. My maternal Swedish family was Nielsen and it became Nelson. Is it a split identity. I think its great that you can change your name. Luckily I like mine.

Interesting that I only had to face and still do folks misspelling my name even when it's right there in the email. Shelly (Rachelle) faced teachers in their elementary school arguing she was ROchelle not RAchelle.

I padded for you with the HHDB comment

My Mom tells how she painstakingly picked my name, and had hopes that since it was short and sweet, I wouldn't have a nickname. Cant get any shorter than being called "G" by everyone. Oh well...
