The King

Inasmuch Wednesday would have been Elvis's 79th birthday. Following is a poem that I wrote in his memory.

THE KING!

I saw the Great Elvis today
encapsulated on film
written off and explained away
and I tried to cry,
cry for him or cry for me
or was there something else?
Or what is gone,
or never happened,
or will never be again
and is lost forever?

He was the shooting Star of the Fifties
when we were young
and he sroked my stirring adolescence.
He could sing,
Man could he sing!

He was profane

and so tough,
so right
and I loved the way he moved --
it was very Rock 'n Roll.

He excited me --

turned me on,
lit me up.
He was the first,
he broke through
and found new ground.

He defied past practice,

revolutionized an entire industry,
energized my whole generation,
Indeed, changed the world.

And then he was fat,

swollen with excess --
his perfect body abused with drugs,
his manhood cuckholded by a neglected wife.

And now he is dead
and I was betrayed.
He could sing,
Man could he sing.
He was THE KING

Love the painting. Joanne really captured him, or whom you portray him to be.

I knew him more from his movies and backed into his songs. Many of his best early tunes I discovered when others I really like covered them. And think about, since he did not write but like that other great performer (who I appreciate but do include any of his tunes in by library -- though I did use a song he did with his daughter in a posted commentary questioning congestion pricing), selected and interpreted quality songs penned by others rather well, I might not have readily identified the song with him Good example; "That's Alright (My Mama) http://tiny.cc/y33k9w v. http://tiny.cc/qg5k9w and My Baby Left Me http://tiny.cc/cj4k9w v. http://tiny.cc/2r5k9w.
As long as the voice worked the visual matter less to me. Shelly would often talk of some of my current faves as being old men. As long as they can sing and play, what matters?
