A New Year's Tradition

Well, maybe just for me.

As we were driving to dinner on New Year’s Eve, I turned to my family and reminded them that I was once again expecting everyone to share a resolution as the evening progressed. I have long been a fan of resolutions and in general, setting goals. I believe that saying it out loud has much to do with making it happen.

Almost in unison, they turned to me and made it clear that I was very much alone in the resolution making process – again -- and that the only resolutions I would be hearing that night were my own. Oh well.

Where do you come out on resolutions? Do you make them and if so, do you think they serve a purpose?

I like goals and plans; whether to share them depends on circumstances; what matters relates to what best motivates an individual; different approaches work differently for different folk.

I make goals and plans throughout the year. If I have a good idea why wait for the new year to begin?

It's always the same one, to lose 10 pounds. I usually do it but by the time the new year comes around again I have to make it all over again. My resolution was, actually, to come up with a better resolution.

I do make resolutions/goals for the New Year which I write down. The purpose they serve is to keep me focused. As we all know life can throw us many curve balls where you get pulled off your goals or plans.

I agree with Liz. If a goal is important to me, I make it whenever I can, not just at the beginning of the year. I think the issue with New Years Resolutions is that it reminds people to make goals or clarify goals they were thinking about throughout the year.

It seems as if making the resolution is the easy part; it's the follow-through that can be so hard (at least for me.)
