Coming Soon To a Vending Machine Near You

One component of the Affordable Care Act in the news these days is a requirement that vending machines display the calorie count for each of the items available for sale. The idea is that knowledgeable consumers will consume fewer calories, curbing an epidemic of obesity in our country and resulting in lower healthcare costs. The vending machine industry is uniformly unhappy with this new requirement given the not insignificant costs associated with this change.

Here is my question for you. In your experience, is the display of calorie count a deterrent? I know that to some degree it is for me but I have to say I do wonder if on the scale of a vending machine it will have the same impact.

If you are at the point where you are buying form a vending machine, it will not have an impact!

It absolutely affects my decision on what to buy. Now I buy a skinny mocha from Starbucks.

I can't remember the last time I bought something from a vending machine; but it's definitely a deterrent for me in restaurants.

What is more important to me is the high fructose sweetener! Your body has trouble breaking it down. Sugar is better as long as you do not over indulge. Mark Krieger

Hell Yeah. Very helpful idea in general from restaurants, to take out places, etc. I don't buy from vending machines either nor fast food, but I find knowing what I'm consuming very important in my weight loss and management efforts.

Knowing calorie counts has deterred me from eating things on the spur of the moment - which is kind of the definition of when you use vending machines. I used them heavily in graduate school (those all-nighters when the cafeterias were closed) and gained weight -- is that a coincidence?

it totally affects what i order and how much of it i eat. Vending machines are not really something i would consider buying food from but if i did i would look for the least horrible choice. Have a happy new year It seems like years since we have spoken lol

I'm always looking at the calories and it always affects whether I am going to eat a item. This week I ordered a take out salad and the only light dressing they had was ranch. I usually only order fat free dressing. When I got back to the office I read the back of the dressing packet-it had 170 calories!! That was probably more than the whole salad. I didn't use it.
