What Would You Do?

An eighth Princeton University student was diagnosed this past Friday with meningitis. To me, this is terrifying. With a daughter getting ready to head off to college next year, this outbreak has my attention, as I expect it has many parents’ attention with college age children.

This latest reported student comes after the university announced that it had received permission to offer a vaccine that has not yet been approved by the FDA to stem the spread of the disease. The drug has been used overseas but is in the approval process here in the United States.

So, here is my question for you Gotham. What do you think of the offer of a yet to be approved vaccine to immunize Princeton students? Would you send your child to sign up if you had a Princeton student?

I would consult with Josh Zinder, Chair of Gotham's Princeton Group

I would probably opt for the drug, but only after (a) consulting with an independent infectious disease specialist and (b) doing some research into the efficacy of the drug in Europe and the reason(s) for the FDA's delay. What I would look for is side effects and whether they might factor into the FDA delay.

The FDA historically has a record of lagging behind the rest of the world with their approvals. More times than not, it has nothing to do with the safety of the drug, but from the drug companies and their influence over the process. Money is a strong influencer. I agree about researching the drug and likely it is fine. Why don't we get the strong (and effective) sun screen Europe has enjoyed for years?

As someone who lives in Princeton I am well aware of this. I have spoken to a number of people at the university and they have been dillegently trying to track teh source right now there has been little or no contact between the indivudals which has made the investigation even harder. More than anything else you can tell you college bound stunent to be dillegent about washing their hands and do not put their hands in their mouth. Also make sure they wipe down atheletic equipement before you use it. I can't speak for everyone but I am not vacinating my family as I do not feel there is enough basis for the accuracy of the vacine.

My niece and my son's best friend since kindergarten (my wife calls him our fourth child--he literally grew up in our house) are both sophomores there. Naturally, we are very worried. I find it very interesting that the university has exclusive access to the drug; wonder who pulled what strings to make that happen. As far as I know, no other university has access.

Pretty scary stuff. I'm not sure what I would do. Using an unauthorized vaccine is scary but the alternative is even worse.

I am with Ben on what I'd do. Also concur with Josh on being sanitary. This might be a reason I keep anti-bacterial cleaner and wipes in my glover compartment and a cleaner in my "walking research wagon" (a good friend coined the name) that I'll rarely use these days.
