Three Movies

There are three movies out now that have some common themes.  They are Gravity, Captain Phillips, and All is Lost starring Robert Redford.   They each in their own very different settings deal with danger, life and death, and courage.

All is Lost is all Redford.  Literally.  Though the dangers of a man alone at sea were predictable, it was still gripping and uncommon.  A movie with essentially no dialogue, it reminds me of The Old Man and The Sea by Hemingway.  As were were walking out of the theatre I was not the only one muttering that I will never go in a small boat.

Of the three though I liked Gravity most of all.  Like All is Lost, anything that can go wrong does.  Job in space.

After those three I need a good comedy.

I have seen 2 of your 3 and was moved by the acting. Have not seen Redford's. 12 Years a Slave is an extremely disturbing polemic.

Haven't seen them and I wonder how long it will take to get them on cable.

Go see LastVegas. Saw it last night and I'm still laughing. It was either that or Dallas Buyers Club and that's not playing anywhere local yet...
Coming soon: The Wolf of Wall Street. Leonardo Dicaprio plays one of the main characters and Matthew McConaughey will be playing the part of one of my husbands family member. I hope he is embarrassed as we all are...
I still can't figure out how they got MM for such an idiot?!?

Didn't Tom Hanks play the Redford role except on land with a basketball conveniently named after his wife?

Did not see them; glad the experience caused you to return to blogging; missed yours last Sunday.

Missed you last Sundy, glad you're back. We rented last night, Now You See Me. Not a comedy, not even a great film but 2 hours of mindless distraction. From me, that's a great review.

We went to see "12 Years as a Slave" yesterday afternoon. Count on multiple Academy Awards. One of the most gripping movies I've ever seen (and I've seen 'em all). Hard to watch sometimes-- the brutality of "slavers" is on full display...

To whoever reviewed "12 Years a Slave," my son is 12, but is very mature. Would the movie be too extreme for him? He loved 42 but I thought it was appropriately softened for family viewing. I want him to learn perspective, but I don't want him losing sleep at night. Thoughts?
