Our First Annual Oratorical Contest

Categories

When I was young and in high school and college I always sat in the back of the room. When I was in law school and they had the Socratic method I was always in dire fear of being called on and having to present. This was not only because I was sometimes unprepared.

Needless to say, as in the case of many, I was in dire fear of public speaking.

Over the years my fear has abated and presenting skills have somewhat improved. I attribute my improvement, in no small part, to the breezy give and take at Gotham meetings.

This brings me to the First Annual Gotham Oratorical Contest which will be held on Saturday November 9th at Mercy College (thank you Dean Victoria Drogin), contest co sponsor. First prize for local high school contestants is $1000.

Our oratorical contest is the brain child of Jackee Schess (pictured above) who recently finished Second in a state wide American Legion Oratorical contest and came away with the inspiration for our contest.

Not only did Jackee conceive of the contest, but she has administered and shepherded it. Obviously, we would not have had it without her and we extend great thanks to her for all that she has done.

If you know of tristate high school students who might benefit from this please let us know.

Of course, when I was young there would have been no way I would have had the guts to compete. Hats off to Jackee and all the contestants!

Contest often provide nice opportunities. Your note about what one gains in the give and take that occurs at Gotham meetings exemplifies a point I make to FF and newbies.

This is going to be great! I fully support Gotham in this initiative. I contacted a former student and asked her to participate. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town and cannot be a judge. Maybe next time.

What a terrific idea! Kudos to Jacqui. I am out of town but when I return I too will reach out to high school students I have worked with. This is such a terrific opportunity for young adults to practice and gain confidence in a skill that is critical to almost all professions. Congratulations Gotham! You did it again.

So, so important for everyone to be able to speak in public! When I was an adjunct moot court instructor at UCONN Law, some students said that they had put off going to law school just to avoid a required moot court course. And they protested that they would never need it because they wouldn't be trial lawyers. I told them they need the skill of public speaking for their personal lives, too -- the condo assn. meeting, kids T-ball parent meeting, etc. This event is a great idea!

I joined my first Networking group in the late 80s specifically to get over my fear of speaking in public. I had abandoned many career opportunities because of stage fright. I worked my way through Brief Introdution to Greeting a Group to Testifying at the Legislature to Telling a Story at my nephew's wedding. It was just last Spring that I actually gave my first real, prepared speech in front of several hundred people.

Now, as many Gothamites know, you can't get me to shut up!

I am so appreciative of all the support. Thanks Fred and everyone else! Looking forward to a great competition.

And now for the proud mother -- it has been quite a ride watching Jaclyn expand her reach through public speaking and looking forward to doing this Gotham style on November 9!

I think this is a great opportunity for kids to have a great learning experience and I hope it grows nicely in the years ahead. Oddly enough, I think this event is best for those kids who don't want to do it since they are the ones that need it the most! Nice job Jackee!
