Does the phantom strike you?

A wierd thing happens to me sometimes and by the chatter on social media I'm not alone. I'll be sitting at my desk, or in my car and I will feel a buzz that my phone is letting me know something is happening. I reach to look to see what it is and there's nothing. No text, no appointment reminder...nothing.

This doesn't happen all the time but enough for me to feel a bit strange. So I investigated and found that there are several names for this effect, “phantom ringing,” “phantom vibration syndrome” and "vibranxiety." In one study over 68% of the people surveyed felt it and 87% of those exprienced weekly.

The reasons are numerous. One psychologist thinks is from electrical signals coming through the phone although he's from Australia. A psychology professor from Calfornia thinks we’re anticipating some sort of technological interaction, especially with our smartphones, so we inevitably interpret some unrelated stimuli, like our pants rubbing against our leg or a chair dragging against the floor, as a phone call. I might believe that.

Any yet another scholar believes we are so addicted to our phones that we need to know what's going on and stay connected all the time. We want our phones to buzz, we need our phones to buzz so we get our body to buzz. Now we're getting somewhere...

What do you think? Does this happen to you too?

I'm still addicted to the old fashioned "back in the day" buzz....

I have newer experienced such thing. Every time my phone makes noise there is an appointment, a reminder, etc.
I hate to be a devil's advocate, but I think your phone buzzing is an actual fact, and has to do with someone accessing your phone's data "quietly". I don't know what type of phone you have, but there were reports that Android phones have been hacked some 80+ % comparing to other phone types. So, that buzzing could be related to hackers stealing your data.

People may get offended but I set my iPhone to "ring" silently. Sometime I play the iPhone through the car stereo because a call interrupts the music and, if I need to take the call, I do. Because I have it on silent, I can leave it out and hopefully not worry about noise. I likely can notice a call or text message. Generally, if I cannot pick up I text or email that I will call as soon as my meeting is done, and recommend texting or emailing in case I can respond in that mode. My son uses google voice mail since he hates to check his (audio) voicemail. I sometimes wonder what happens have you travel through a dead or weak signal zone; I think the noise discussed by Mitch occurs on the reconnect.

I recently shut the vibrate option off on everything.
I also noticed I am receiving alerts for things I never had before . PM's on Facebook and Linked and some others...they all sound like a text. I'm changing my settings...I don't like phantom buzzes..lol

Perhaps it's a lexulous nudge :-)

Yes this does happen. It is very strange. I feel the vibration and there is nothing there.

Depending on how you have your settings, so App notifications vibrate and show a temporary message. If you feel the vibration but don't look at the phone quickly enough, the message disappears. Check the settings on all your Apps. It may help. :)
