A Nightly Schess Question

For years, I have ended each day asking my children to “tell me something nice you did today.” I have heard really great stories over the years.

Sometimes it was “I helped my friend with a hard math problem”. Other times I heard “I helped a younger kid find their classroom”. Once it was “I was worried that one of my friends had a terrible problem and wasn’t able to deal with it. So I went to the guidance counselor to see if they could help.” [There is so much more around this last story but it is better for its own blog.]

I have always been gratified by these stories. But here is the problem. While I am convinced that both of my children could continue to share moments like these, I think my question has overstayed its welcome. These days I get more of a toss of a hand as if to say, “Mom, don’t you have any new material?”

So Gotham, I ask you, any suggestions for a new Schess question? I will of course give attribution.

What did you learn today that you did not know yesterday? This is what our Father asked us each night at dinner. With seven children it took awhile to go around the table.

You're children are older than mine, but my 7 & 9 yr old love our daily ritual of what was the best thing that happened to you today and what is the one thing you would like to change about today. The change question often brings the funniest remarks!

Several years ago I began starting and ending each day stating the things I am grateful for. It has served me well through some challenging times. How about asking the kids to offer something they are grateful for. Another good question might be what have they done for themselves that day. It will reinforce the idea that they owe themselves good care.

Very weird and provocative. I never had to ask. Always something to discuss. Perhaps every family has its own dynamic.

My nightly question is, "Why did I let my kids go so far away to college?"
