I Just Can't Remember

Categories

When I was younger, I had a great memory. As a student, I could read something one time and be able to regurgitate it back on an exam. At this point in my life, however, my memory is not the same. I am constantly picking up the phone to make a call and forget who I wanted to call or walking into the pantry of my house to get something and forget what it was I wanted to get. I’ll consistently think of great blog topics while driving to work and forget what they were by the time I get myself to a computer to write.

I use several tricks to help me remember. Several years ago, my office manager convinced me that I needed two computer monitors on my desk in order to work more effectively. I find that my dual monitors are most useful to hold the small yellow post-its that I stick on them with my reminders to myself of tasks that I need to get done. I have also copied my children’s habit of texting reminders to myself. If I buy groceries during the day and have to put them into the refrigerator at my office, I put my car keys in the grocery bag so I remember to take the groceries home. My Mom taught me that one.

Do you have any other memory tricks for me?

There is some herb that helps your memory, you should get some. I forgot what it is called though.

My memory is enhanced by keeping a diary (especially when I read it)

Oy! Feeling your pain! I find that lists are very helpful as is routine. Can I tell you how many times I find myself walking in circles looking for my car??

Interestingly repetition helps memory. So we'd read something but also have a HW assignment as a student and the rep helps. Sometimes the secret would be writing it down. For me entering a new contact can help. I use two screens but not for post-its (well the sides around the screen sometimes. and sometimes the sides around my keypad (either side of the mousepad on my macbook) I also try to make diary notes in my calendar. I do keep lists of things that matter to me (some relate to music - concerts, set lists, Albums (which matters more for the LPs and cassettes not yet digitized because all of the CDs and other digital music on my Mac is on my iPhone and maybe one day I will put it on the cloud -- it is but not in my system).
I also try not to crowd my brain with data readily available if i can figure that one out.

I add tasks including errands to my calendar with pop-up reminders. Moments of inspiration are logged immediately on my phone's note pad or voice memos. Some one once asked me what I'd do if something happened to my iPhone. That's simple, I would immediately go to the store, buy another, run home to synch it and get my day started again. :)
