Gotcha!

Most of the time when I'm walking through the City I am approached by someone looking for money and from my last experience, they are getting very creative now.

I was in front of Grand Central Station enjoying the beautiful day and the architecture when a man came right up to me and said "Do you speak Hebrew?" I immediately stopped and looked at him. He was, in my judgement, in his late 40's early 50's, dressed casually in a short sleeved polo and jeans pulling a suitcase on wheels. He did not appear to be a beggar.

I responded "No...but I do speak a little Yiddish." He then told me he's from Israel and that he just needed cab money to get to the airport. I gave him 5 bucks, wished him luck and moved along. It seemed a bit strange to me but I let it go until the other day when someone was telling me about the new street begging scam. Specifically how they dress up in nice clothes, carry a briefcase or suitcase and ask for help...

I'm not sure what he did with the money but maybe he found his way to Israel. I hear the street beggars really rake it in over there.

My father always gave, so I do too. In the 70s and 80s it was quarters but we are up to $5 for people with kids and women on their own. In Chicago my husband gave out $30 over eight blocks in ones and twos.

I don't care if it is spent on drugs or booze or food and shelter. It is a sad way to make enough for a luxury vehicle.

PS My husband always says "I spent all my money on wine, women, and song...And the rest of it I wasted."

Whe I was in law school, I used to walk every day from Penn Station to Lincoln Centre. There was a begger on my route. My Mom used to make a sandwich for me to give him everyday. One day, he just wasn't there anymore.

I tend to give, but generally to two individuals: one individual resides near my office and the other is an individual in a wheel chair outside of the local cafe. Although the amount is small I am sure it is appreciated. I also buy the individual outside my office coffee or something to eat. Maybe my good deeds will help me win the lottery.

I keep a few dollars in my pocket, so I don't have to open my purse, for such occasions. However, I did open my purse once to give a guy on the street extra because his sign made me smile. It said "Who are we kidding? We both know I'm going to buy wine with the money you give me." His humor, honesty and laughter while talking to people who stopped to donate netted him quite a bit that day.

I once needed directions to a subway station, and a fellow on the street walked me there.... Yes, then he asked for a dollar and when I opened my purse to give it to him, he saw a $20 bill and said, "Twenty dollars would be nice." I said, "I'm sure it would" and gave him the single. He thanked me and walked on.
