Losing

I admit that I am competitive. Does being competitive make losing harder to bear?

Gotham has two softball teams the Gotham Bombers and the Gotham Batmen. I pitch for the Gotham Batmen.

Last year we finished in first place. This year the Batmen finished in second place with a nine wins and two loss record.  The season begins in April and ends in August.  That's a long time to be caught up in competitive softball madness.

In each year we qualified for the playoffs and a chance to win the Championship. Last year we lost in the Final.

Monday night was the first round of playoffs and we played the sixth-seeded team.  Inexplicably, we came up flat and got destroyed by a nine to nothing score.

Now I'm wondering if I've pitched my last softball game. Then I remembered that we have the August 24th picnic – softball game against the Hinterlanders.

Maybe I (we) should just play it for fun....

When I posted the above it had paragraphs and spacing. Sorry for the compression.

It's like the doctor says....relax and enjoy it...I'll bet if you just play for fun you will win! Good luck on the 24th!

We love you competitive spirit. Where would Gotham be without it. Playing for fun is always fun. Playing to win is playing to win. Both count. And you're far too young to quit!
Cynthia Somma

If you quit everytime you "lost"--think of where you would be!!
If anything, this only makes the next round more important.

I wonder if Rosario is thinking the same thing...

Don't try and fool yourself. You will never stop being competitive. I figure if we are sitting in wheelchairs, next to each other, you would still want to race.

It is a pleasure to have Fred and the Gotham Teams play in NYC Metro Sports. I have no doubts that come next April the classy Fred Klein will be back on the mound. What his wife and doctor say is a whole new ballgame! Commissioner Mike.

No way are you just playing for fun. We don't even write blogs just for fun.

Men don't stop playing because they grow old, they grow old because they stop playing.

Fun is more fun when you win

Perhaps inexplicably the six-seeders played better and made your team feel flat. Why blame the performance of the Batmen. No doubt, the opponents must all have been on stimulants and drugs banned at the professional levels. What else can explain the inexplicable?

Odey Raviv: Playing and competing keeps you "young" and spirited. Don't give it up because of a tough season ending. I know you relate to Mariano but I think you should sign up for at least another year!

The team that beat us beat the undefeated first place team 14-7 for the Championship

In the world of professional soccer, there are what are called 'International Friendlies' and the result doesn't count. Is supposed to be 'practice', 'fun', or whatever you want to call it. David Beckham famously said "There's no such thing as a friendly. Everytime we step on the field, we want to win"

If I'm not mistaken...haven't we had conversations in the past about quitting :)
I tell my kids that there is nothing wrong with being upset about losing as long as you handle yourselves properly. It shows that you care.

I refer to the great Charlton Heston quote when it comes to me playing hockey...I'll stop when they pry the stick from my cold dead hands.

C'mon, Fred! Everyone has off days, and the worst teams sometimes beat the best ones. Hang tough! LJM
