Having a Puppy

It's true... having a puppy is like having a new baby and in our case "a late in life" one.  We did have dogs in the past.. but then they ran free and no one worried about what they ate.  I certainly never learned how to walk a dog on a leash... still haven't mastered that trick.  The training is all about me learning how to teach Charcoal.  Just got a call from my son wanting to know if he can visit with his dog...  well - Lucy wants nothing to do with Charcoal and my puppy is all over her.  I can't deal - need a training session with Mindy (dog trainer) soon to remedy that situation.  Still am loving this adorable ball of black fur (natty dreads and all).

Dogs are the best, they don't talk back...in some sense they don't growup....always thrilled to see you, even if it was 5 minutes ago.
When we bought our first dog home 7 years ago it was so heartwarming to watch my sons show such TLC, every day, every minute.
Everyone talks about not doing how hard it...yadaya. She's a beautiful addition to your family. Good luck with everything. I went thru training as well, I'm such a mush I had to stop....so my Luci kinda trained me. Worth every second of it! Xoxo

Love our dogs but they drive me nuts. They constantly dig out under our friends to escape and I keep warning them that one day I will not go look for them. I don't think they believe me.

When Charcoal is a grown-up dog, you'll appreciate how much time you put into training her now. Be patient and persistent and use the same training as each other with her. Remember, no touching her when you're giving her a command or correction because all she'll be aware of is your touch, not what you are saying. She wants to please and you'll teach her how!

Our dog is completely integrated into our family; she's well-trained to both vocal and hand motion commands from me, however, she's my wife's "best friend," and almost totally untrained as to her! Yet she still seeks affection from me and wants to play rough with me (which my wife doesn't do). Our kids are somewhere in between, in their relationship with our dog. The lesson here is, I guess, about what kind of relationship one wants to have with the family pet. We each are happy with how things are, so different strokes for different folks.

The last "anon" was me, about different family members' relationships with our dog. The website went "anon" on me again...sometimes I need to log in and sometimes it's already logged in...I don't usually notice. Best, DJA

When my dog was a puppy, I thought I could train her without a professional's help. She then proceeded to dig at my leather couch until she ripped it apart. I called the trainer the next day.

We have 3 Havanese and a dog nobody has ever heard of... a Bolanka. My wife has showered them with lots of love but little training. They don't dig so at least we don't have that problem! However, there are easy dogs to train and very difficult dogs to train. In either case, I agree with others who have said that early professional training is a plus. The key, and I definitely know this from experience, is follow-through. If the trainer gives you the rules and you don't follow them religiously, you are not going to get a good result! We were horrible at follow-through... I wish you luck!!!

Hang tough...No Pain No Gain....Enjoy the moment with Charcoal...She won't be a puppy much longer. I'm a little over the top with Finn and Kona (according to Diane) and as much time as I spend with them Diane is still the leader of the pack. As a powerful significant other you will now have two Dogs that adore you. Charcoal and Fred. Corey's comment re: The Eagles is right on. Timothy B. Schmidt of Poco replaced Randy Meisner on bass and Joe Walsh replaced Don Felder. Walsh and Schmidt were both not original Eagles. But both Schmidt and Meisner played with Poco. Got it ? Have fun....!!
