What’s “luck” got to do with it?

Categories
Lifestyle

I was brought up with the work ethic that success requires dedication and hard work. The concept of “luck” was for winning the lottery (although even there, you have to buy a ticket). With that in mind, I have worked hard and succeeded at just about every job and career I’ve chosen. When I haven’t succeeded, I’ve been able to look back and see where more effort would have produced a different outcome.

However, the last few years I’ve heard the phrase “good luck” more often than I think I’ve heard it my entire life. Is it the industry I’ve chosen? Is it a sign of the times? Never having considered myself a lucky person, the concept is disconcerting. Add to that, I’ve noticed an unprecedented number of people succeeding (or at least appearing to do so) by shear luck - born into a family that hands them what they need, having the right friends at the right time who help them…and it makes me wonder.

Do we need “luck” to succeed?

I never believed in something called "luck." And you only perceive what others call "luck" after the fact. I am more active than passive: I do believe in chemistry and finesse, which are skills and are to be practiced, making up the essence of success, along with surrounding yourself with great people for additional reinforcement.

Telling someone "good luck" is almost as bad as telling a performer "break a leg" (believe me!)

I believe that what most people view as luck is really fate, and there are reasons for why, when and how things happen and to whom. I have no doubt, that your "luck" will come!

The old (and correct) work ethic that requires hard work, dedication and perserverance is, and will remain, the truest mentality that can be passed on and down to each generation. Those that get things handed to them (most of the time), either destroy what was built up and/or sell it (when it's a business) and ultimately spend the proceeds with no long term plan (I've seen this happend many times) or (when it's a position of responsibility) undermine subordinates and/or colleagues when it's obvious the individual isn't qualified in handling the responsibilities provided. There is no substitute for hard work and a passion to succeed. Over time, the end does justify the means!!! Mike A.

"I think luck is the sense to recognize an opportunity and the ability to take advantage of it. Every one has bad breaks, but every one also has opportunities. The man who can smile at his breaks and grab his chances gets on" -- Samuel Goldwyn

Great blog, Liz! I've always considered myself lucky, but I've never gotten anything without incredibly hard work. I guess that's 'the luck I make for myself'.

I always figured it is good that I am skillfull because I'm just not lucky!

Great post - I don't think it is luck, but hard work. There is, however, the concept of people opening up the possibilities enabling your hard work to pay off - this is accomplished by them wishing you luck, or success etc.

Jerry Glick says I don't believe in being luck or unlucky. Seizing an opportunity when it's in your face and recognizing the potential of how to turn straw into gold, making a lemon taste like an orange, embracing it, taking it, running with it. That's what luck is. Turning many situations into the most positive outcomes. Say to oneself, no way is this B.S. going to fly. Now what can I do to get over on this nonsense. Yes, lots of determination and stubbornness. It doesn't always work but at least you gave it the full you. Being married to a "Glick" Which means best of everything, good health, luck, etc. helps. Luck is winning an all expense paid trip--no strings attached. Lotto, Bingo..etc..
All else is work, difficult or not---seeing it through.
Enjoying life. Money is not the end all.
Happy life.
Then there are blessings, I waited for a daughter to enter my life for as long as I remember---she did not come easy---I went after what I wanted with a vengence. Lots of intervention (divine and medical) and here she is....I'm still in awe..and luck had nothing to do with it :)
I do believe that what you put out to the universe will come back to you...pay it forward every chance you have--
Nancy Schess

Maybe a little. But I think success is a very personal term and whether you need luck for success depends on how the first is defined. Did that make any sense? [And by the way, I think you gave me an idea for my next blog so thanks!!

I think the idea that luck is the result of hard work or that you make your own luck is complete BS. We all have stretches of good luck and bad luck, but the idea that it's not real or a factor in people's success is unrealistic. BTW, there is another factor I see more and more in today's society, which is what lengths people are willing to go to for success. There are more and more people simply trying to make money off of other people rather than providing quality products or services. Major problem in this country.

Great Blog Liz. Further proof that there is no relationship between the length of a blog and its quality. :)
