First Friend

A high school friend who is a reader of my Friday With Fred blog sent me the following email last weekend:

You always do great “starters” and I thought if you had remembrances of yours [First Friend] it might qualify for a prompt for your followers.  I began thinking about my happy childhood and those who contributed to memories that made it “fond”, when I first began, unknowingly, to feel warmth towards those outside of my immediately family. Looking back those memories remain so fresh and clear, untouched by any complication.

She goes on to send the above photo of her and her first friend who she is offering to share her Oreo cookie with.

Thus challenged, I pondered my deep past and at first came up empty, but I stayed with it and finally remembered a little boy.

His name is Michael, from my early grade school years in Forest Hills and I never really liked him back in the day.

A strong memory was him out “Flipping” me for all my baseball cards.  An even stronger memory was him catching his fingers in a 3rd grade classroom door (which did not make me unhappy).

Flash forward to my freshman year at Syracuse University and the first Sigma Alpha Mu pledge class dinner. Sitting next to me was this guy and I asked him his name and he said it was Mike. I just knew it was the same Michael. I asked him if he grew up in Forest Hills and he said yes.  I then asked him if ever caught his fingers in a classroom door and from then on we were fast friends and Fraternity Brothers.

Do you remember your first friend?

There are a # but happy that some from high school and even JHS years stay in touch, even grade school but sometimes geography and other items factor in.

There is something special when you re-connect with an old friend from childhood.

I remember my first friend. His name was Jimmy and he had red curly hair and freckles. When we graduated kindergarten, he asked me to marry him. I asked my Mom and she said I could; but would have to wait until after collage.

I remember the visual of meeting my best friend Keith Bernstein at about 15 years old. He had a long ponytail and a beard (at 16!) and was dragging a keg in to the woods at one of our impromptu beach parties. He was such a badass. We went on to race motorcycles and do countless dangerous things. I was best man at his wedding and then we drifted apart for a couple of decades. Victoria and I went to visit him in Arizona last year. Same gregarious, fun loving guy.

Great blog, Fred, thank you for inspiring me to remember my first friend, Joyce. My parents, sister, and I lived in an apartment building on the 2nd floor and Joyce lived with her family on the first floor. I'd forgotten all about them until now.
Joyce and I became fast friends for a few years but drifted apart.
But my sister was best friends with MaryAnn, a girl who lived in a different building up the block from us. My sister and her first friend were lifelong friends, some 70 years, until MaryAnn's passing two weeks ago. Does anyone else have a lifelong friend?

Yes - And we are still close.

First friends were all from my old neighborhood in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. Not the same place today, but then a very tight knit, middle class, small and quiet beach neighborhood. Unfortunately, most of who I knew have moved far and drifted apart. Some have been rekindled when Facebook became popular. It is so hard to keep in touch in person as we all change from geography and family obligations. I do have many fond memories of those days.

We have been friends since high school - before we met each other neither one of us had too many friends. we went through thick and thin together and never lost contact till today

I remember flipping cards with my brother!!! We spent hours doing it.

I remember the first day I saw her - as she walked down the driveway to nursery school. She was the most elegant and beautiful child I had ever seen. My jaw dropped.

After that we always went to different schools but stayed in touch. She became an architect because my father was one. Saw her for dinner last month in San Francisco. Still elegant and gorgeous and such a kind person.

Great blog Derf . My first best friend was a dog . I remember running home down Locust Lane from the East Hills School and cutting through private property to get home and play with Buster . My Irish Setter. I’ve had several best friends since . All dogs . The tragedy is that they don’t grow old with you . My current best friend is Finn . A big black lab with a heart so big that it hurts . He brought me back from some bad times and stuck with me for better and for worse . Unparalleled Loyalty . So ...... I talk to him . He listens . He understands . Once in awhile he even talks back . I trust him implicitly which is more than I can say for most . He’ll never let me down . I’ve always hung out with my dogs . Swam, hiked , went for rides in the truck . Shared Carvel cones . Drank out of the same toilet . Shared the same pillow and snored side by side . Last year one day I hadn't seen him and his sister all day . They were up at the school yard playing with the kids . About a mile up the canyon and across the creek . I took a tumble off the back deck into a thick hedge . Couldn’t extricate myself . In ten minutes two wet dogs were standing over me . Barking for Diane and pulling on my boot . I hang with them all day and night . Always have and always will. When I cross the bridge they’ll all be there waiting . Something to look forward to .
