What Happened to the Beach?

Last weekend we ventured for the first time this season to our local town beach. We are Town of Oyster Bay residents on Long Island and so ToBay is our beach choice when we feel the need to touch the ocean. And, we’re Long Islanders so that’s half the lure to being here.

We hadn’t been to ToBay since last summer. Usually it’s a pretty long walk from the parking lot down to the beach. Admittedly, I’m usually complaining along the way. First there is a long walk through a tunnel just to get to the edge of the beach – and then the long walk in the sand to our place to plant in the sand.

But this time, when we reached the edge of the beach something was different. We looked at each other and said out loud – what happened to the beach? Half of its depth was just gone. Gone. I literally had to hold on to climb down the sand hill to the water.

Clearly environmental changes are taking their toll on my community. It has me both sad and angry. There is talk about a petition to get the town to re-sand the beach. Hopefully, something will be done or by next year we will all be sitting in the concession stand.

Beaches are shrinking in most areas. I see it in Florida all the time and up north as well. Not sure what can be done long term. But it as a problem as you have noticed.

Sigh. Signs of climate change are all around us. Re-sanding the beach is a short-term solution that won't last. We all need to do our part to mobilize to address the climate emergency. Check out this website for more info: https://www.theclimatemobilization.org/

We were at TOBAY last weekend. We walk to the right (west) and it was fine. I remember seasons with even less beach. Funny though, my neighbor said the same thing about the lack of beach. Try going to the right next time. I think there is more beach to the west.

Unless on vacation I don't generally go to the beaches---so horrible to hear the change, our environment is taking a beating and unless we do something to preserve it our lives (and our children's lives) will be forever changed. I adore Sea Cliff Beach however our N.S. Beaches are quite different ---the reason I love Sea Cliff is that I can walk/sit on the Boardwalk, listen to the waves and take in an extraordinary view. Never a crowd, and as I approach the water in my car it is not only a beautiful sight with the sailboats etc, but I can literally feel the stress releasing.

Love the beach. I walk from our house a few times a week. Marilyn, I hear you. I feel the stress drain away when I look at the water. Come to our lovely little Oyster Bay beach. :) Yes it’s rocky, and on the bay. But it’s beautiful! And has a beautiful marina and view of Cold Spring Harbor (and CT). Very Billy Joel vibe.
