Batting Practice

Categories

One of the very very special things in my Afterlife is the weekend ritual of having batting practice with my 51 year old son David and his 20 year old son Jackson, my Batman teammates (pictured), at the local school yard.

We bring a box of balls, take turns as one hits, one pitches and one shags.

There are muscle memories and eternal memories being sown and words can not describe the feelings that well up in me as we do our thing!

Wait there’s more, grandpa then drives to the deli and buys lunch.

I told my friend Neil Hollander about these magic moments and he wrote:

Great to step into the [ Batter’s] Box and hear the crowd roar as Bob Shepherd [Iconic deceased Yankee announcer] calls your name: Now batting...#3...the pitcher...Derf Nielk [my name backwards]...#3!

What a great American story. Generations of men doing manly things, keeping tradition. Love it.

Three generations on the field and a fourth involved too. Great times making great memories.

I have impressed upon him just that!

Thanks for the shout out Derf . Iconic indeed . Every at bat I ever had was announced by Bob Shepherd . The only difference is that I was #7 the center fielder , Mickey Mantle . Anytime I took the field I was the Mick . I ran like him , choked the sawdust out of the bat handle like him, rolled my cap like him and had his glove . I even pretended I ripped my knee on the legendary drain in centerfield . My 11 th grade science project was “ The Drainage System of Yankee Stadium .” So whether it was Bob Shepherd or Mel Allen I basked in the self imposed limelight of Yankee Stadium as the afternoon shadows crept in from centerfield . We embodied the young boys and the hero worship and the baseball cards . Smelling the bubble gum powder on the back of the cards . To have 3 generations acting out this fantasy is priceless . But only you Derf cherish it as strongly as I do .

I think you need a bucket or pail for the balls!. Never used boxes.

I love traditions. Your grandson will carry those memories for the rest of his life.
