Be careful what you book

Ben Speller and a friend from the U.K. traveling to Amsterdam for a soccer match booked a “clean home in Amsterdam with a private bathroom” using AirBnB. It was available for their last minute decision and only $128 for one night.

When they arrived, you could say it was a bit of a surprise that the “clean home” they had secured was a large metal box standing on the side of the road. When they opened the door, they found three mattresses covered in flimsy bedding and a portable toilet installed inside.

“We took a few pictures of the inside and then we went to find a hotel,” Speller said. The hotel room cost them an additional $300, but the AirBnB host was not sympathetic to their complaints. Luckily, AirBnB reimbursed Speller for the “room,” his hotel and removed both the host and listing.

BTW, the shipping container was also removed because, unsurprisingly, it wasn’t actually allowed to be there.

I've heard many horror stories from people who used AirBnB; but this one tops them all. I wonder how many times this host was successful in renting the shipping container before having to remove it?

This is quite an eye-opener but a total departure from the experience of several friends who rave about their AirBnB, including staying on yatchs for those who like the water. I assumed there were photos online. Obviously, not in this case. Thanks for fair warning

My kids swear by Airbnb. I still like a nice hotel room where someone is going to clean up after me.

My family swears by Airbnb. Me . Nope ! I’m not looking for surprises . Call me spoiled . Especially across the pond . I’ll take my Four Seasons . No surprises . I’m not looking for complications or disappointments . 300 thread count sheets please. And like Rona said . Take care of me please . Putting it into perspective I travelled for a living for 40 plus years ..... No surprises .

Yes, very creative. I would agree with the others stick with a nice will known hotel room. It really is worth it. Who needs extra aggravation....and drama.
