I'm in the Middle

I have seen the term “birth order” mentioned a lot lately on the internet. Many psychologists say that birth order influences one’s personality. Other scientists state that there is no convincing evidence that links personality or behavior to birth order.

I am a middle child. I have an older brother (the first born male "Prince") and a younger sister (the baby). I have told all my life that I am a “typical middle child.” I know that, at my core, I am a people pleaser and a peace maker. My sister says that I emphatically avoid any confrontations in my personal life more than anyone she knows.

I have always interpreted being a “typical middle child” as being someone who is looking to find their place and, thus, looking to please others. Without reading any of the literature, I guess I always assumed that my birth order has influenced my personality.

What is your birth order? Do you believe it has influenced you?

As you know, I am the baby in my family. Have never been sure really what that meant in terms of birth order. I remember that Linda Newman gave me a book a few years back about the significance of birth order. I read it at the time and I think I will pull it out again after reading your blog.

Nancy is correct! I am a big believer in birth order. Rona, I am sorry to disappoint you; however, according to the literature, you a first born female. The book is "Birth Order" by Kevin Leman, PhD.

I am the oldest. I have two younger brothers and two younger sisters. I have always loved being their mentor, leader and protector. I couldn't imagine it any other way!
