Easter, Passover, Afrokomen

A good number of us gather with family this weekend. Some gathered today for Easter. Others including members of my family gathered Friday and Saturday eves for Passover. Usually we host one night and visit with family or friends (Appreciate the invites). Periodically, if find ourselves out of town, we participate in communal seders.

This year, we hosted both nights.

One night her family dad, sister, niece, her husband and their young daughter (who found the Afrikomen!); last night my brother, his wife and my nephew, and our stepmom. The constants, both eves, our daughter and our son and his girlfriend. Must give Shelly a lot of credit for pulling two nice eves together.

Were you part of any gatherings this weekend?

Hosting?

Visiting?

With Family?

Friends?

Both?

A communal gathering?

It was very special for Shelly and I with both our children present both nights (Marisa lives in L.A.).

We hosted 10 people on Friday night and 30 people on Saturday night. While Saturday night was a bit more hectic, I took a moment at each Sedar to look around and just be thankful for my family and friends. And, be thankful that they were all, clearly, just enjoying being together.

Ava and I hosted 17 Friday night. Saturday Ava, our daughter and I headed up to Fairfield to enjoy Pesach with about 30 at her cousins. We enjoyed one of the most memorable Seders ever as three of her family and guests are Israelis by birth and two of her cousins children actually served in the Israeli army. The prayers, story telling and after Seder song was invigorating. I went to Israel two years ago looking for culture and instead I found it right here in America as you can take an Israeli out of Israel but you can’t take the Love and passion for Israel and our culture out of the Israeli !

We hosted 27 on Saturday. Every year my wife and mother in law implore me to take my time and go through the whole thing before we eat, reason being that the dinner isn't ready if I go too fast. At the same time my Dad and brother beg me to speed it up and skip stuff as they are impatient. This year I finally got it right. While I did the whole thing it only took about a half hour. I got kudos for my handling of the reading, but the real stars are Mrs Kreit and Mrs Ginsberg for their hard work preparing the festive meal.

Pesach has always been a very special holiday for me. Until my parents deaths both seders were conducted at their home by my father who indeed "conducted". My brother took over after my dad's death and he has to a large extent kept all of the family traditions intact (with the exception of the fact that our entire family no longer comes together for one large seder on both nights). We learned on Saturday night that my brother will probably be moving out of state this year and that was possibly the last seder he will be leading. I promised my daughters that next year we will endeavor to carry forward the family seders in my house, although I am definitely not as proficient in Hebrew as my Dad and brother. Rona I definitely applaud you for being able to host so many people, I recall with warm memories my mom doing that as well.

New traditions are cool too and I look forward to you sharing the success next year!
