Birthdays

As blogged last week, Saturday was my birthday and it was a very very nice day.  Fred is 77

Thank you all for your happy birthday wishes through blog comments, emails, texts, cards, phone calls  and Facebook messages!

Presents came too.  Examples are cool Roy Orbison/Sun records and Batman tees plus significant numeral art work from Jo, a chilled bottle of my favorite Veuve Clicquot champagne, and a coveted painting (pictured) from my favorite local artist.

A favorite family tradition was honored by family members and friends singing “Happy Birthday” and there’s even a Facebook video.

Also special were the greetings from unexpected people who were from long ago.

There was also a fun birthday dinner with a mix of old and new friends.

I managed not to dwell on the number and relished the moments.

Thanks again for a very special day!

Wishing you many more to be continually filled with love and laughter.

One of my most cherished “birthday wishes” was from about five years ago when you and Jo sang a very spirited happy birthday into my phone messages. I still have it!

I'm glad you enjoyed your birthday and love your enthusiasm for celebrating every day.

Love it. So wonderful that you enjoyed every minute of your celebration. Someone once asked me what would it be like if we could celebrate every day like we celebrate her birthday. She called them alive days. She lived to 102. I try to remember that every time I can. I think you do that, Fred, not just the day you were born, but the days that you live. Happy alive day! Xo

Always nice to celebrate and hear from people from your past. It makes future events all the more better.

So Derf I’m right behind you . This July I’ll be 75 . In the spirit of Gotham I’ve always found it better to give than receive . I’m uncomfortable receiving gifts of any kind and would much rather bestow on others . Freud might say it’s because I feel unworthy . I have no trouble bestowing on myself though . That way I get exactly what I want . This year my kids want to make it especially special . I’m already feeling anxious . It’s MY birthday . Not theirs . If I plan it Diane will say I’m being controlling . If they plan it it will somehow make me squirm . Seven kids and a wife . That’s eight inputs . Some how they’ll miss the dinner at Luger’s , the dugout seats at Yankee Stadium , The Cubans, the suite at the Peninsula , Blah Blah Blah . Listen to me ramble on in a self righteousness that nauseates even me . It’s best that I GIVE my loved ones presents on MY birthday . That’s where the true fulfillment lies for me .

That’s why I took Jo to the dress shop on my birthday!
