The Era of Influencers

Categories
Lifestyle

We are living in an era of influencers. Apparently, Kim Kardashian gets paid an extraordinary amount of money for having her picture taken with a product. I have noticed that other celebrities will do the same on Instagram. They will post either a picture or a video using a certain product and, clearly, endorse the same. I guess it’s the social media version of a commercial.

So, I was intrigued when a friend told me that she was going to try to become an influencer. She has been a stay at home mom, who's youngest child will be leavng for college in September. She also became a successful blogger and, recently,  has been advised that becoming an influencer is the next step for her.

As a loyal friend, I immediately like her Instagram Influencer posts and comment accordingly. On a personal level, however, I like seeing someone out there on social media endorsing items that are relevant to me; such as outfits that I would like to wear as opposed to what Kim Kardashian would wear. I truly hope my friend becomes successful.

Are you influenced by influencers?

I'm not a Kardashian fan and I don't believe I'm easily influenced. Fluted sleeves are in, yet I protest. I know LOTS of people that are influenced by social media. I hope she captures topics of interest--real life, functional ideas that make life easier.

Being left handed I am probably influenced in the wrong way :)

It’s an amazing industry. My daughter and her friends follow many “you tubers” who offer viewpoints, product endorsements and “lifestyle” tips. These young people have maximized a social media opportunity/phenomenon that has allowed them to monetize their “brands” and sometimes create new ones ((Bethany Moto at Aeropostale, for example). It takes a lot of hard work. I guess this is why Olivia Jade is mad at her mom for ruining her company by lying and bribing to get her into college. ;) which she did. She had just gotten a huge deal at Sephora for her own make up line. On the other hand, with some genuine contrition and a little brand crisis management, maybe she’ll come back stronger than ever. As my mom says, the internet is an amazing place....

Just the opposite. Since I learned about what an "influencer" is I find myself questioning what people allege that they like---do they like it? Are they being paid to "like" it? There are few people I would rely on for recommendations, and if indeed I needed a suggestion I would reach out to them privately.
