Giving Back

When Fellow Gothamite and co-chair of the Long Island Dinner Group, Laurel Scarr-Konel asked me whether I would like to judge a high school Moot Court competition, I paused for a few moments before volunteering with an enthusiastic “Yes”.

In those few moments, my thoughts went from my time commitments to “could be interesting” to giving back to the community.

Giving back is so important and there are so many ways to do so. If I can, perhaps, touch even a single high school student who is competing in moot court and has an eye on joining the profession that has been such a rewarding journey for me, I will have given back and it would have been worth it.

I have been volunteering for education since I was in high school - when I did tutoring and ran after-school art classes for 6-10 year olds. In the past few years I have done sample job interviews for young adults with autism, acted as a proctor at the local Tech Trade School, given scholarships galore, and judged a "Talk Like A Pirate" competition. For Example.

My brother founded a company to bring arts education to the New York Public School, and now has a school in Staten Island named in his memory. Never underestimate the kids or youth! They are treasures. We are just the lucky ones who can give without taking anything but memories.

And we even co-judged a round! Such an awarding experience. This was my first with Moot Court. I typically attend the bi-annual Career Fair which is also such a heart-warming experience.
