Idlers

I recently pulled into the parking lot of my local 7/11 to grab a cup of coffee. There's always a spot up front at 7AM but I parked three rows out and walked up to the store. It was a beautiful sunny day.

As I made my way, I noticed that 6 out of the 10 cars parked in the lot were idling without a single soul inside any of them. They were all running with smoke coming out of their tailpipes. Tailpipe with smoke

I was surprised. It was about 50 degrees and sunny so there was no reason to keep your car either warm or cool.

Aren't they concerned that their car will be stolen?

Adding to Fred's comment, they are also wasting money. It may not amount to much for that one stop; but overtime it could.

In roughly 1989, I pulled into my 7-Eleven in Queens Village that I always stopped at to get coffee in the morning. I backed into the space right in front of the door and left the car running as I always did. I was puzzled when I saw the brake lights go on. As it pulled away, I ran after my brand new Honda Accord, but when the guy went through the red light, I gave up. Lesson learned.

The insurance company paid me for the car and about six months later it was recovered in a chop shop, but it was half gone.

Can it be laziness? They just don't want to deal with turning the car on and off.

It seems to be a problem with the no key staring cars and also the hybrids. I know of people including myself who left their cars locked and running without realizing it

Pollutes, wastes gas, can get stolen or broken into and most people don't realize it is just bad for a gas powered car to sit idle for any long length of time. Fuel injectors get clogged and engine wears out faster. It's why they have idle meters on cop cars.

When I pull up to a 7/11 I shut off my car d lock it. Guess they don’t worry about someone stealing their car. Hey, I’m from tne Bronx. We lock up. That never leaves this Long Island girl.

Interesting to have read this immediately after the Gotham Green blog from Corey (reading in reverse order). I cannot conceive of a justification under usual circumstances, and it is a violation of many village and town ordinances.

That's a good point Marilyn. I wonder if they are violating them...worth a look see.
