Lesson from the News

I was listening to a discussion among news commentators about the Jussie Smollett situation. I am reluctant to characterize it as a hoax, alleged attack, alleged hoax, or anything else.
One commentator’s take away rang most true for me. He (I think it was Jeffrey Toobin) noted all of the quick reactions—from public figures and others — when the alleged assault was first reported.
The lesson for all of us is not to jump to conclusions.
We are subjected to so much news and information from so many sources that these words of advice are indeed well taken.
As my father would say...always count to 10 and think.

Good advice from your Dad. Well said. So much information delivered at once.

Good blog and great advice. Too bad 90% of the news media will never take that advice. Their pay, their very existence, is predicated on the number of clicks or minutes watched on any story they write or concoct. True journalism is on life support. That's the real story, not that one bad guy may have done one or two very bad things.

Please take the time to watch this "Straight down the middle" interview with the very respected investigative journalist Lara Logan from a few days ago.

It’s so easy to be the news or make the news today because of the very fast times we are living in due to the internet/social media. So it is very wise advice.

Thank you Ben, definitely advise I try to follow. Will be watching and listening and counting to 10 (at least).

There is so much information coming in all directions and much of it designed and targeted to match our pre-disposed reaction. So now I count to 10 and check the source. I might even count to 20 if it is in alignment with something I already believe to be true because it's too easy to reinforce a belief that might not be based in fact.

I learned long ago not to jump to believing what everyone says. If it's important to me, I do the research to make sure it's true before acting.

Fans of "The Phantom Tollbooth" know not to jump to conclusions, since you might get automatically transported to a deserted island named "Conclusions". #ReadingIsGood
